Any experience with the Corbin Smuggler

http://www.corbin.com/bmw/k12gtsmg.shtml

Anyone have one of these? Seen one of these? I'm still on a quest to find space to store stuff for my day to day rides, and this looks pretty interesting.

I had a Corbin saddle custom made for my GPZ1100 and was very happy with it. Luckily the Corbin factory is only a short ride away for me, so I can get it fit to measure.

From the Corbin website the trunk looks there's a lot of space around the lid when it's down -- is it waterproof?

I have put about 40k on mine. It has always been waterproof. I use a backpack from CCT 2005 that fits in in very well. When the back pack is not in there I can fit my Shuberth and Jacket in it. Wouldn't want to give it up. Six bolts and my back seat and trunk are back on.

I have had one on my 2005 LT ever since I owned it. Loved the thing it has so much more room than the original tour pack. The bikes seems lighter with it on. I just sold my LT and have taken it off. I plan to put it on EBay and sell it. It is Ocean Blue in color, which matches all 2005 and 2006 Ocean Blue. It is in perfect condition if anyone is interested.

GT smuggler, not LT

Interesting, the GT smuggler (see link) looks like a totally different beast. It replaces the back seat only, looks like I could still put the topcase on the rear rack while the smuggler was on.

Corbin's website says their seat mounts are incompatible with BMWs, so switching to the smuggler means getting a Corbin front seat as well (bringing the total to $1360) and giving up the height adjustable front seat. Also if I ever want to take a passenger this means adding a Corbin rear seat ($439) or switching back to the stock seats (which means some wrenching on the seat mounts.)

This might make this a nonstarter for me. Much as I like the idea of a rear seat tank bag, the overall cost or lack of flexibility sounds pretty bad.

I wonder if I could convince Corbin to build a seat and smuggler around the BMW base instead? ...or start learning how to mold fiberglass. :-)

There's a guy on K-bikes that got the Smuggler setup for his GT. He might be able to answer some of your questions, though I think your last analysis is pretty close. Link here.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...
