Question Fuel gauge malfunction…any suggestions?

2006
K1200GT
62,000 miles

So went for a 3 day ride last weekend. Planned to leave Saturday so fueled up on Friday. I did NOT take any notice of the fuel gauge (although I did NOT notice the big yellow triangle warning light so I’m guessing it wasn’t there)
On Saturday head out and notice the fuel gauge is at …well it doesn’t register any fuel and the yellow triangle is flashing. The ‘miles to empty’ is counting down rapidly from about 175mls. Gets to ‘0’ quickly. A few miles down the road the gauge is back with the miles. Next look down….gone, with miles counting down again…starting lower though. This goes on (on and off) for about an hour. The rest of the weekend there is no fuel gauge and no miles to empty. I did try turning the bike off and on again to try a reboot but problem remained.
Any thoughts? Is this a fixable problem (by me)? Or a BMW tech, big expense repair?
And please…I know I can go old school and just keep track of my mileage, so don’t bother with that suggestion.

Ok...upon further investigation I see its the fuel strip which goes bad quite often on the Ks.

I also see mentioned that they are under warranty for 12 years. Is this right? I'll contact BMW dealer to check. Anybody go through this?

Re: Fuel gauge malfunction…any suggestions?

Your bike uses a fuel strip to determine fuel level, not a float system. The strip system is covered by an official BMW recall and will be fixed for free.

I change your tires $50, you buy them on the web.

Many people, including me. See:

Finally Bitten by the Fuel Gauge Strip - 2007 K1200GT - K-Bikes.com - Excellence in Motion

The BMW motorcycle dealer replaced my fuel strip, but apparently they did not calibrate it properly. Even though the bike showed fuel remaining, I ran out of fuel immediately after the fuel strip replacement on my way from the dealer to the gas station.

I don't care what BMW says, but no fuel gauge should ever show fuel remaining when it runs bone dry.

I am in the habit of using the Trip Odometer as my fuel gauge. When I hit the magic number, I start looking for gas. I really don't pay attention to fuel lights or gauges.

Re: Fuel gauge malfunction…any suggestions?

Did the K1300GT ever get the float system replacement for the strip as did the boxer RTs? What year?
