Is this worth a restore?

So long story short:

I recently started working as a front end manager at a local shop. On consignment is a 2003 K1200GT with 46k miles. The owner has now passed away and the family is willing to part with the bike for $800.

The bad is that its not currently running as it has sat for a few years. The last mechanic to look at it thought it was a starter module that needed to be replaced to get it running. The plastics are in rough shape and it needs a new seat.

Is it worth $800 to get and slowly restore or flip?

Re: Is this worth a restore?

For $800 I'd be buying it, even if it's just for spares.... but then I have the same bike in a 2004 build.
Unless there's real issues with the bike, it would very likely be great to rebuild, even if you put a little more than the cost of the bike into it.
BTW, it's not a "next-gen" K1200GT, is the brick-engine K1200.
Better forum for this model is either iBMW or K-bikes.

Re: Is this worth a restore?

if i was living in your area i would buy that fast. In my eyes, if it isn't my daily driver, it becomes a project bike that i can fix up over time. Part of the fun is figuring out the problems and overcoming them, and also sourcing used parts at cheap prices. $800 is what i paid for the driving lights on my current bike.
But then again, i am (was) a certified tech, and i do get pleasure wrenching on these things.
So if you dont like tinkering/rebuilding, and you need this to be a reliable ride in the near future, it may not be a great idea, regardless of the price. However, if you are like me.....
