Question Hazard lights won't turn off

Yesterday I needed to use the hazard lights for just a second. I thumb both R&L switches, they come on, as they should. I try to turn them off by pressing the signal cancel button, nothing happens. I press one turn signal button and that side flashes and the other side stops, as it should. I stop the bike and turn the key off, then press the cancel button, no good. I disconnect the battery, wait a few min. reconnect, no flashers. I think good. Hours later,,, I check and they are back on!!! All this is at work, so I ride it home with the flashers flashing. I have a GS911. No luck. All it said is both R&L signal switches had a open circuit fault, fault not present now.

Any help.

Re: Hazard lights won't turn off

I don't know your bike specifically, but on my 2000 RT there is a switch specifically for turning the hazards on. Pressing both turn signals will give you hazards while you hold them down, but turning on the hazards switch activated them permanently. To turn the off you turn off the hazard switch. On my bike the hazards worked one time when I first got it, but when I went to use them a second time they wouldn't come on. I pulled the switch out of the bike and flushed it with electrical contact cleaner and they've worked every time since. I'd suggest trying the contact cleaner on your hazard switch, it's possible that it stuck in the on position.

Re: Hazard lights won't turn off

Thanks, I called the service guy at the dealer and that's pretty much what he said. The bike has been parked for a while so that makes sense. I just don't understand why the turn sig switches, and the cancel switch, work for the turn sig, but not for hazard.

Re: Hazard lights won't turn off

I'm not really following your question, but the hazard circuit is a completely different circuit than the signal circuit. They use the same lights, but the turn signal cancel won't stop the hazards, and activating a turn signal won't override the hazard lights.

As a side example, this is why you should never turn on your hazards in the rain. When you do that it stops your turn signals from so you can't indicate a turn or lane change during a time when it is most critical that you do so. BMW wires their bikes so that you can activate both signals at once to simulate hazards, but the hazard circuit still has priority over the turn signal circuit. This is done for safety reasons.

Re: Hazard lights won't turn off

All that is controlled by the ZFE module so there could be a fault there. Too hard to troubleshoot with out a computer. The 911 should tell you if there are any ZFE faults.

Red face Re: Hazard lights won't turn off

I found the problem! It was a loose nut behind the handlebars. I had downloaded a owners manual. the download ask if it before or after Aug 05, not knowing when my bike was built, I just picked one. I picked the wrong one, and it made a difference! The early bikes have a red button on the left switch cluster, the later ones don't. I was so focused on the cancel signal switch, I never even looked at the left cluster.
You can activate the hazard lights by pressing the red button, or both signal switches at the same time, but you have to press the red button to turn them off.
