Cam Chain Tensioner?

Hi All,

Has anyone had to replace the new and improved tensioner? Mine started to rattle on start up again and then it just quit. Thankfully it does have the skip guard installed so I hope it did not damage anything. I guess I may start carrying one of these if they are also failing.

Cheers,
Jim

Re: Cam Chain Tensioner?

Yes. My K1200GT had the new "piston" cam chain tensioner. About a year ago, it developed a mild cam chain rattle that went away. A year later, it came back. I had just returned from a 500 mile ride that day, parked the bike, shut off the engine, opened the garage, then restarted the engine to park it. It was incredibly loud; it sound like the engine was coming apart.

A friend dropped by a few days later. He immediately diagnosed the problem as a faulty cam chain tensioner. He had an APE tensioner with him, which I recommend. We (he) installed it, and all was well. It took ten minutes to remove the old tensioner and install and adjust the APE tensioner.

Manual Cam Chain Tensioner - BMW K1200GT K1300GT - by APE Race Parts - - A&S BMW Motorcycle Parts and Accessories

The APE tensioner requires care when installing and periodic adjustment. It is a tradeoff between that and having another BMW oil reservoir tensioner eventually fail.

Cam Chain Tensioner Up Date.

The GT is up and running. It did turn out to be the cam chain tensioner and after installing a new one it runs very quiet again. It must have been loosing pressure for a while and progressively getting worse and being next to the clutch I thought it was that was making the noise.

The root cause of failure was dirty oil. When I pulled off the tensioner from the reservoir nasty oil came out and when I looked down the plunger the check valve was not visible. Once I cleaned and cleared the valve in the plunger it started to take oil and pumped up. I then used a syringe to suck out the old reservoir and the oil was not good (see photos) and I had just done a oil change no more then 200 miles ago.

Not sure if more frequent oil changes will help or I should add a 2 year maintenance to clean out the reservoir and change out the o-rings.

Re: Cam Chain Tensioner Up Date.

That oil looks just like normal BMW oil, its not dirty at all.

Re: Cam Chain Tensioner?

All I can say to that is the oil in the sump looks almost new and the oil out of the CCT does not. If BMW thinks that oil is good... they might need new glasses.

Re: Cam Chain Tensioner?

Replaced mine a few years ago with the adjustable APE version.

Seems to wok...needs adjustment on occasion.

Here is the Oring kit that is needed to rebuild the cam tensioner.

You don't need to buy a complete new unit.

I change your tires $40, you buy them on the web.

Re: Cam Chain Tensioner?

I have a '10 13GT and my 2nd tensioner just failed after only about 14 months. Probably put 15k mi on it? I'll be taking it back to the dealer to see if they'll help. Luckily this is not a difficult or expensive fix.

Re: Cam Chain Tensioner?

I just got from my first ride on my 08 GT since the cam chain jumped the tracks last August. My dealership missed doing the recall but did the ones on either side of it on the recall list.

I was lucky enough to find a used motor on ebay for $999. While the bike was apart I did everything else that might have needed service right down to having the steering stabilizer serviced.

At 60,000 miles I have had replacement parts, warranty costs and maintenance costs that are almost equal the cost of the motorcycle. If I take the cost of the bike and add in all of these costs costs, my 230 mile breakfast ride this morning has a cost to me of close to a $1.00 mile
