Talk me off the K1300 ledge

I just sold my 97 R 1100 RT today ( with the intent of buying a newer model). I found a beautiful Blue/blk 2010 K 1300GT with only 3500 miles. It has all the recall work done by BMW and comes equipped with some nice farkles for $12K. Ive not ridden a K 1300 but have dug deeply in here about it's characteristics. I just can't get over the mileage. It's like new. Help me guys, am I crazed?

Re: Talk me off the K1300 ledge

Go for a test drive if possible, make sure it runs well. Those are "zero" miles! Buy it and go crazy with fun this summer. Be ready though, highest maintenance costs of all the BMW's. I own a K bike and know. Try to do most of your own maintenance. If it is at a dealer ask if you can purchase an extended warranty. Just replacing ball joints is $800 plus. Otherwise I suggest another RT 2010 or newer.

Re: Talk me off the K1300 ledge

I'm curious about your comment "I suggest an RT 2010 or newer". The reason I ask is there another 07 RT I've considered. Is something troublesome about the 07 RT's?

Re: Talk me off the K1300 ledge

They are not the highest cost, especially if you do your own maintenance. All the new slant bikes (K12,13 &16) require removal of the cooling system to perform valve checks but they are @ 18 K interval. Every thing else is easy. And the 160 Hp is wonderful.

Re: Talk me off the K1300 ledge

I had an 07 RT, nothing wrong with it. I just like the shim valve adjustment of the 10 and newer ones. They hold set longer. And now that BMW has given a 12 year warranty on the fuel tank level strips there is no worry there.
I have a K1300S, I have bought and sold two RT's, 2007 & 2010. I can't get into them because the K bike is so much more of a bike for me that I can not give it up. What does that say. (I bought all the equipment to remove/replace the radiator) I set my own valves, just ordered new cam shafts at 80K to replace pitted ones in the bike right now. Am on my second set of ball joints also, getting good at pulling the wheel carrier. Installed Wilber shocks last fall for another 1400$ but well worth it. Worn out ESA on the shelf. Other than that nothing out of the normal maintenance. I lube splines, rear link bar bearings all that weird stuff on a regular basis. I try to keep ahead of stuff. A GS-911 is a good tool to have also.

Re: Talk me off the K1300 ledge

I might have been talked out of the K1300GT. I spoke to the service mgr/mechanic at my local BMW dealer. He said no BMW mechanic wouldn't choose a K1300 over an RT. RT's more reliable, easier to work on and are the "flagship" of BMW. That carries a lot of weight from a guy who is inside BMW bikes on a daily basis. I look forward to the rebuttals.

Re: Talk me off the K1300 ledge

You condensed my comments and got them from the shop too. I'll never be with out my K13, since it looks like the end of production may be near, I'll have to buy a used one if mine dies.
I suggest you buy the newest RT you can afford. Why buy into something that is already 8 years old.

Well, the K1300 is a LOT faster. It's also a little more roomy, i.e. longer.

BMW boxer twins are really sweet and are the world's benchmark Police bike.

It's highly unlikely, just in addition, that "all the recalls" have been performed on the K1300 in question, as the rear drive flange recall has just been announced, and the service campaign to replace the handlebar switchgear is pretty new, too.

Here's the thing to know about BMWs and any German luxury vehicle: they are closer to being Ferraris than they are to being Camrys.

If you're looking for refrigerator reliability you should look elsewhere. If you're looking for world-class dynamics, this is the place. You only live once and there should be no guilt when it comes to owning a motorcycle.

Re: Talk me off the K1300 ledge

The K1300 series is at the end of the line. They are expensive to maintain. Not as comfortable to ride two up, I don't think. The larger gas tank on the R bike counts for a lot out on the west coast. In my mind (and I own a K bike and love it) there is no reason not to buy an RT. the new ones are really good. Cheaper to own (work on), plenty of HP now and super dependable. The triangle of seat, bars and pegs has been lowered 20mm so it is not as tall as in the past. The only think I can think of is in the past my RT and GS seats have been too soft. It is the flagship of BMW for touring and really one of the best sport touring bikes made. Absolutely no reservations recommending them to someone for a BMW bike to ride.

Re: Talk me off the K1300 ledge

Agree with the mechanics statement re service . Only a RTW can compare . The 1300 is the fastest ST bike BMW makes . At the asking price its a steal . Buy It and a extended warranty !

Re: Talk me off the K1300 ledge

I went from a K1300S to a new R1200RT last year after riding the KS for about two years. The performance of the K1300 will never be matched by any R bike, but the handling, ride, low center or gravity, and comfort is much better on the RT. I really love the K1300GT and came close to buying one, but they felt very top heavy to me compared with the RT. I was more confident on the RT in a few days that I ever was on my K1300S - but boy did I miss that K engine. How about one of each?

Re: Talk me off the K1300 ledge

I replaced a 2006 RT with my current bike, 2009 K1300GT. The power and ride is incredible, you wouldn't be disappointed with the GT. I installed bar backs and a peg lowering kit and it is more comfortable for me. Putting aside the recalls, I have had no problems with this bike. The mileage on the GT bike that your looking at is low and if you didn't like it, I'm sure that you could recover all your costs in a re-sale. It's all polished and ready for Americade.

Re: Talk me off the K1300 ledge

You might get lucky and the K13GT is reliable. Those bikes are outstanding though. Once you get a whiff of their power you'll never look again at a RT... No sir.
Get ready to spend though...

The discussion is nearly one year old. I am sure that at this point the OP either bought it or not, and the seller found another buyer if the OP didn't buy it.
