Fuel sending unit failures

I took my 2008 K1200GT in for it's 30K service and had received a recall on the fuel tank quick disconnect. Service manager came out and said "did you know your fuel guage is not working?' I said it was working when I got here and he said "well, it's not working now". They replaced the sending unit under warranty and 400 miles later it went out again. I received a letter from BMW shortly after I had it serviced stating they were warranting the fuel sending unit for 12 years because they have had so much trouble with it, that "I should not rely on the fuel guage" and should keep track of mileage between fueling. Great! 22K for a bike without a fuel guage. Also, the ABS unit went out at 16K and had to be replaced. It would have been over 2K if I did not have an extended warranty.

I have been riding BMW's for 12 years and am beginning to wonder if there is a reason to buy another. Just my 2 cent worth.

Re: Fuel sending unit failures

Dick,

That fuel gauge strip is a flaky design. I had one on the 09 GS and I ended up using a piezo BBQ lighter to "zap" the substrate back together. It would be too hard to get to it in the GT, but I am sure it would work. I just picked up a 2009 1300GT and luckily it has the float. If you enjoy riding the old girl you have to put up with her temperament.

You ever going to come back up to the Ironhorse again?

If you have another ABS failure, Module Master repairs them with a 5 year warranty for $250. I had mine done on the RT. Not an especially easy removal and install but doable.
