Thumbs up Raced my first Harley today!

While cruisin' through the city of Akron, Ohio . . . running two-up and minding our own business, I see Harley Boy roll up on me. He looks over and blips the throttle of that silly & stupid loud Harley, and it's GO TIME!!! He punches it and bolts ahead about half a bike length. I yell to my wife, "Hold On!", downshift twice and punch it. That boy didn't realize his Harley had reverse!

About a block up, I stop at the red light. He pulls up next to me. I flip up my Nolan, look over and said, "Sorry, but it's slow." He says, "But your bike is ugly." So I said, "You think mine is ugly, I don't! . . . But we all KNOW that your bike is SLOW."

The light turns green, and the champion pulls away. Atta boy GT!

Need to put you a little sticker on the side - 4 more and you'll be an ace...

Guess he thought with you being 2-up he had the edge.... Probably at home pouring through the catalogs looking for another chromed performance bolt-on...

Nice work Joe.

I hang with some Harley people. It is amazing how little they know about non-Harley motorcycles. If a Harley guy puts a new cam in his Dyna Glide he thinks he has a fast bike.

I was passed by a couple of Harleys on my GT the other day. Since I have had two recent tickets I let them pass. Both in bad boy outfits and no helmets. All I could think as they passed is they have no idea what a real motorcycle is like.

I have the Harley that comes from the factory with the most HP. It is 125 hp. The VROD might get off the line quicker than the GT but would be soon passed by the GT. Still most Harley people do not consider the VROD a true Harley.

Of the bikes listed below, the GT is the best looking. Except maybe for the 72 Triumph.

Is that at the crank, or the rear wheel?

At the crank, I think.

Actually Harley also makes a drag bike that is not for street riding that I think is about 160 HP.

You should have got off the bike walked around the ass end and shook your head, then told him," your right I never got to look at it from behind. Does it get better as it gets further away?"

yes..... at the crank
i think we all know that HD has the knowhow to make high horsepower bikes.... they just don't
and, rightly so....
afterall, ther "AVERAGE" buyer of HD bikes would be a menace to themselves and others with that kind of horsepower..... and "average" HD riders are NOT looking for a high horsepower ride

here's something to consider:
for those of us riding a GT.....
what PERCENTAGE of time do you REALLY think that you are utilizing ALL that the bike has to offer.... horsepower-wise?

i would conjecture that most folks can go on a 400 mile ride and never use 75% of the bike's RWHP..... for if we all really did seek to explore all the horsepower on a regular basis.... our licenses would be revoked in a week

Well theirs just looks differant from behind because of the attachment points for the manure spreader, or does that go on the drivers seat

You will soon find out (young grasshopper) that the HP that the GT offers is not only for running it up to redline. Yesterday's ride with my bride was such a pleasure because of how often I didn't have to downshift due to all those ponies and the nice torque curve. The boys at BMW really got this one right! You'll see... Can't wait to get out on it again today. And the weather looks perfect again. Two gorgeous days in a row in northeast Ohio? Say it isn't so!

Joe,

While doing my normal morning routine of going through the new posts I have to thank you for the layer of coffee on my iMac. While reading your "That boy didn't realize his Harley had reverse!" comment I was taking a big swig of coffee. Needless to say, I sprayed coffee all over my Mac and my desk due to laughter. Do you have this trade marked? You mind if I plagerize? Other than the "most expensive Harley accessory, the Ford F-150 to tote it in", that is the funniest yet.

Thank you!

That maybe the rationale for the news report I read today that attendance at the Surgis thing is expected to be down this year as a result of high gas prices. Those F150's really guzzle.

I lived near Myrtle Beach AFB when the A-10 Warthogs were first introduced The running joke around the base was that the airframe mechanics had to go back to school to learn how to repair trailing edge bird strikes.

Of course no one laughs at the A-10s now, after they finally got a chance to show what they can do.

I always thought of a Harley as a washing machine on spin cycle because it vibrates so much. The poor guy on his $30,000 wash tub already has to bear the stigma of owning something that can't handle, stop or accelerate worth a damn and now he has to face the ultimate humiliation of being beat by Joe on his ugly GT no less. Oh the shame!!!

Blew 3 away in one go!

I just had to pick up on the thread today. There I was riding along on my new LT when in the distance I saw 3 what looked like LTs riding along in line astern. Getting closer I heard the noise then saw the familiar HD uniform topped off with the "my head's harder than your's" helmets and finally the regulatory and mandatory HD slower than normal traffic speed. Yep, a trio of Electra Glides posing along. Ah hell, there was no point in claiming ace status in one go, so I waved as I whipped past them still in top gear. Unlike Joe who had to downshift twice! (He was still new to his GT at that point in time) He will now have learnt that you needn't change out of 6th - just open the throttle from any speed and it all happens quickly! So, if you see a gaggle of HDs riding along, have mercy!

Gee Whiz Joe, just when I was telling some of my buddies on I-BMW.COM that you were a stand-up/ok guy. Now what do you do, go race an HD. The 88 cu in. stock puts out a whopping 65 or so bhp at the wheel. the 103 Screamin' Eagle, not a hell of a lot more, and are we supposed to compliment you on this NON-FEAT?

Hey, drop on over to K-Bikes.com unless you are there already and also I-bmw.com. We need some interesting people there and you are indeed interesting. Looks like you are truly enjoying the GT, as am I. I'm not selling the LT yet, and probably will not, as good as the GT is (I also have the Cee Bailey screen), it ain't an LT. But then again, my resources may be a bit better at my age.

Seriously, drop over the GT/NextGen forum on I-bmw.com. lots of K-bikes members and it's, well, getting a bit tiresome without a bit of livening up.

Best Regards,
John

Yeah, but it's kind of like riding a fine piece of artwork--in metal. A fine piece of artwork is to be admired.

To think that the art could stop and go, well--is asking a bit much!

Some of the one-off custom choppers are truly works of art. I'm not talking about cookie-cutter customs slammed out every day, or the "build-a-bike" catalog customs. And anything that gets mass-produced by the hundreds or thousands each day can't really be called art.

Just an opinion, of course.
