Tank Bag

After going back and forth on bag solutions for the GT, I finally swallowed hard and bought the higher priced solution from BMW. The attachment method appeared to be robust and well thought out. After installing it I found, as many others have, that the attachment method was not as good as it at first appeared. The lower straps are easily 1" longer than they needed to be and the bag would not stay in place. The dealer was amazed at how poorly it fit and urged me to return it.

I have used the Chicane bags on my LT, RS and on the S and have always liked the quality, but I wasn't certain one would work as well as I thought the BMW bag would. I chose a Canyon EX bag. When expanded to its fullest capacity it will hold 19 liters. I was also concerned that it might interfere with some of the handlebar controls when the handlebars were moved from lock to lock. I used the standard Chicane straps with their $8 set of paint protector sleeves and attached it similarly to the method BMW used. The bag is tight in place and does not interfere at all with the controls.

Here is a link to an extensive review of the chicane bag.

Here are a couple of pictures:

NIce bag. I am a little surprised about the BMW bag fitting poorly.

How about some pics of the pinstriping??

I was going to order the BMW tankbag tomorrow...but now I'm not so sure. I have a TourMaster tankbag on my Ninja that just might work perfectly on the new GT. More on that later...

Joe,
I'd highly recommend the Big Mak tank bag. Best set up of any for refueling, doesn't honk the horn on full left turns, and multiple accessories available. You can see it on the Cycle Gadgets website. I have one on my GT and I ran into two other newGTers this weekend and they both plan on ordering one. after seeing mine.

Another BigMak please

MitchRider
Cant agree with you more. Just posted a similar message on the BigMak on another site. I purchased the Explorer model and it fits the 06 GT great.
Did you use the 6" or 5" rail?

I am very surprised. BMW bags are usually higher priced, but you could always count on them to be well engineered. The one for the GT is a clear oops.

BigMak

Just in case anyone is interested, here are a couple of photos of the BigMak on my GT.
Randy - I would certainly agree with you about the BMW bag for the GT. Seems like the QC went out the door with this bag.

BigMak

Yea...I like that. Bummer about the BMW bag. I had $300 just burning a hole in my pocket.

I'm still going to try out my TourMaster bag. It doesn't have the fancy schmancy mounting system. But it is bigger than the BigMak. Although, it might be too big. We'll see.

Thanks for the pics! BTW, is that the 6" or 5" rail?

BigMak

I have the 6" rail. Was debating on the 5" but like where the positioning of the 6" puts the bag to my chest.

I got a chance to try both the 5" & 6" rails as Mark(BigMak) is using my GT as a model for templating his products, not only the tank bags but reflective and protective films, and bag liners. Both sizes worked fine, but I chose the 5" as it kept the bag further back to clear the possible future mounting spot for my GPS.

For your consideration. SW Mototech from Twisted Throttle.com(if I may mention a vendor), $75 plus $25 for the tank base. Ended up $135 with postage to Alaska. I got it last week and plan to put a comm package in it...next purchase.
