WAY cool...upcoming SENA update

Got an email yesterday that the upcoming software update for SENA systems will let you connect to ANY bluetooth device/intercom/headset. In other words, if you have a chatterbox or cardo or other system, you can connect with yours (great if you meet up with a buddy for a ride and he/she has a different system) or even a bluetooth headset for someone in a car.

details on their website

Re: WAY cool...upcoming SENA update

It's the Sena 20s. I spoke with the Revzilla folks about it last week. They said that it should be available in the April-May time frame. Based on their initial claims it seems to be the way to go!

At least until the next generation comes out in a year or two...

Re: WAY cool...upcoming SENA update

Installed the 5.0 update to my SMH-10 last night and had a chance (in 22 degrees, but SUNNY!) to test it out on the bike today. Installation was a bit of a chore as I'm running Windows 8.1, a 64-bit OS. I downloaded and installed the 64-bit version of the SENA Device Manager, which worked fine. I plugged in the SMH-10 and initiated the 5.0 firmware update. The first time through, it hung at 90% so I had to terminate the program. I removed and reinstalled the Device Manager (again, the 64-bit version) and tried it all again. This time it worked - not sure why.

Anyway, I opted to enable the "Sidetone" option which picks up your voice while on a phone call and routes it through your speakers/headbuds. Not sure if I like it yet, but I can see that it may come in handy for those times when you think you should be yelling into the mic, since you're on a motorbike and all. I also enabled the "Microphone Boosting" option which does just what it sounds like it would do - boosts the level of the mic to compensate for wind noise and the like. I made a call to my office phone while out and about and it sounded quite good; very good, actually. I never had any issues with wind noise in the past, as least people I've talked to while driving haven't said anything to make me think there's a problem.

The only complaint I have, and this could be the way I have things set up, is when my GPS is giving directions, the Sidetone functionality kicks in so I can hear myself breathing while my GPS is telling me where to go. I have my iPhone 5s paired as the phone, and my Nav IV paired as a multipoint device. On the GPS, I've paired the "audio" to the SMH-10, vs the "phone" option. Not sure if that makes a difference or not. I have it set up the same way as I did with the 4.2 firmware. And, it all works, so I'm not too keen with farting around with it more (if it ain't broke....) I guess I could disable the Sidetone option, but I kinda like it. Oh well, I'll manage!

Overall, I think it's a good update.

How did you enable the microphone boost? I read through the new manual and can't find it

I believe you can only do it through the SENA Device Manager software, under the Device Setting menu, while the SMH-10 is hooked up to your computer.

Re: WAY cool...upcoming SENA update

Ability to communicate with other BT headsets is a game changer in the market. Any outfit that fails to follow and darn quickly will get hammered to death in short order.
For those who don't like to have obsolete stuff and are buying this spring that makes the Sena the only reasonable choice given that there are only negligible differences in performance between it and, for example, Cardo equivalents (that I use).
But I expect Cardo and a few others will respond eventually- they've got no choice if they want to survive long term.
