Re: WAY cool...upcoming SENA update
Installed the 5.0 update to my SMH-10 last night and had a chance (in 22 degrees, but SUNNY!) to test it out on the bike today. Installation was a bit of a chore as I'm running Windows 8.1, a 64-bit OS. I downloaded and installed the 64-bit version of the SENA Device Manager, which worked fine. I plugged in the SMH-10 and initiated the 5.0 firmware update. The first time through, it hung at 90% so I had to terminate the program. I removed and reinstalled the Device Manager (again, the 64-bit version) and tried it all again. This time it worked - not sure why.
Anyway, I opted to enable the "Sidetone" option which picks up your voice while on a phone call and routes it through your speakers/headbuds. Not sure if I like it yet, but I can see that it may come in handy for those times when you think you should be yelling into the mic, since you're on a motorbike and all. I also enabled the "Microphone Boosting" option which does just what it sounds like it would do - boosts the level of the mic to compensate for wind noise and the like. I made a call to my office phone while out and about and it sounded quite good; very good, actually. I never had any issues with wind noise in the past, as least people I've talked to while driving haven't said anything to make me think there's a problem.
The only complaint I have, and this could be the way I have things set up, is when my GPS is giving directions, the Sidetone functionality kicks in so I can hear myself breathing while my GPS is telling me where to go. I have my iPhone 5s paired as the phone, and my Nav IV paired as a multipoint device. On the GPS, I've paired the "audio" to the SMH-10, vs the "phone" option. Not sure if that makes a difference or not. I have it set up the same way as I did with the 4.2 firmware. And, it all works, so I'm not too keen with farting around with it more (if it ain't broke....) I guess I could disable the Sidetone option, but I kinda like it. Oh well, I'll manage!
Overall, I think it's a good update.
