Kenwood FRS/GMRS cable question

For any of thos that have the cable to connect a Kenwood FRS to a Voice II comm system, is a a straight 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm and 2.5mm to 2.5 mm or are there jumpers within the cord? I was hoping to avoid the $ and use two seperate cords, a 3.5 stereo and a 2.5 stereo.

Re: Kenwood FRS/GMRS cable question

You are correct, they are simple 2.5 and 3.5 cords that you can normally pick up at Radio shack. If you look on line there will be a few sites that sell the kenwood cable. They are however "cloning" cables that are missing one connection.. I.e. do not work.

The 2.5 is a little tricky to find, however. I just purchased the connections and made my own...

Thank you. I was hoping this was the case but you never know with BMW if they will switch a few or add a jumper to make you pay the big bucks.

Re: Kenwood FRS/GMRS cable question

I found the 2.5 and 3.5 cables but after reading more on the forum there seems to be conflicting information. Most schematics show the speaker and mic terminals to be in a different position on the Kenwood end from the voice end. Here is one example

http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/attachme...achmentid=4423

This shows speaker + going from tip to sleeve and negative going from sleeve to tip..

Similar flip on the mic connections. Any input would be appreciated as I will be getting a Kenwood TK-3160 within a day or two.

That link did not work for me, but I had an OEM cord and simply did a continuity check. tip to tip, base to base... can;t remember if the mid was operational...

Re: Kenwood FRS/GMRS cable question

Thanks again. The diagram in the link was showing tip to base and base to ring and a crossover wire between the speaker ground and mic pin. Bmw likes to make easy things complex sometimes.

I would just use the OEM cord but I am putting the radio a little ways from the intercom and that cable is just too short.

Hell, that schem may have been mine. the cross over was needed to connect and I-com to the BC3 system (PS2 end)... The bikes were made with Kenwood in mind, so its a direct match...
