Which headset?

Hello everyone,
I know this has been covered a thousand times in this forum, and I think I have read half of the threads. I am a bit overwhelmed.

I just bought a 2002 K1200LT with (I believe) a BC-3 comm system. I don't have headsets or cables, but I WANT them

I would like to take advantage of the equipment that is on the bike, and the way I understand it, that means using the cables. I am fine with that.

My primary motivation for getting headsets is to be able to talk to my wife on the back. If we don't have an open line of communication, we will be stopping every quarter mile to talk. Listening to the radio/MP3 player would be next most important. I don't see myself using the CB anytime soon, but I'd like to have the option. Of least importance is cell phone connection. Riding is my time to relax. Talking on the phone interferes with my relaxation. The wife, however, would like to be able to use her phone. If I tell her that its not possible, she'll believe me

Here's what I am thinking about so far:
Performance series J&M headset #HS-BCD279-FF (we both have full face helmets)
Lower cord without the volume control HC-PJM

First of all, will this setup work for what I want it to do?
Next, should I get the lower cord WITH the volume control? Cost is a factor for me. I really only want this feature if someone here thinks that I will regret not getting it. I think that made sense...
Lastly, are there other options that would be as cost-effective?

I really appreciate any thoughts on the subject. I almost ordered this stuff, but decided that I should ask some advice from people that actually know what they're doing.
Thanks!
-Dave

Re: Which headset?

Dave

I use these universal fit headsets since they are a little cheaper but fit all style helmets. The cord that you mentioned will be the only slight problem for the rider. It is fine for the passenger....too short for up front. The BMW cord (6 pin) was longer in the uncoiled section. See attachment.

http://www.sierra-mc.com/proddetail....S-BCD279-UN-HO

I got around this by making a 16 inch extension cord from parts from Radio Shack.

6 pin Din Jack
6 pin Din Plug
16 inches of wire

The connections go straight through from pin to pin.

As for the inline volume control....I don't use it but if your spouse has a problem with how loud you like your music, you may want to try it.

Hope that helps,

Ron

Re: Which headset?

Dave,
It should work just fine. My '02 has the BC3 system and I bought the same lower cables but we bought the "universal performance" headset as we have 3/4 helmets but if we bought full face they'd work their too. You really won't need the in-line volume as it is adjusted from the intercom very easily. I could not find the longer BMW cord anywhere as my plug is mounting in the dash up under the BC computer display. The regular J&M cord worked fine for me (going under the bars) and stretched fine for me. I'm 5'8" so that may have made a difference. However I would NOT have your wife plug in and then climb on the motorcycle. You'll find yoursef buying or replacing lower cords as they'll flex too much at the flex point and eventually separate. She'll have to learn to climb on and then plug under the speakers or connect her helmet to the lower cord. Voice communication is just fine. I think music would be better with the Elite series though. MP3 going through the plug on the intercom left something to be desired. An MP3 player hooked into the intercom will only play through the headset and not the external speakers. J&M does stand behind their products.

Re: Which headset?

Thank you guys for the reply. I am going to go with your recommendations.

Kellenbenz, that is a great setup you have. I wouldn't have guessed that you could get those plugs at the Shack. I will try to do the same. What did you use to make the bracket on your handlebar? It looks great. If you haven't patented the idea, I'm going to imitate it...

Blueknight, thanks for the tips. I'll make sure she's all settled and I'll plug her in before I get on the bike. I would love the better sound quality from the elites, but I can't really justify the cost at this time. I appreciate the input on the volume control. I'm sure we'll make due without it.

Re: Which headset?

Dave,

I have a "Slick" Ram mount clutch cover on my bike that provided me with a place to put an Adel clamp for the extension. There are a lot of far less expensive ways to do this now.

Here is a link to one of them:

Feel free to copy all you want...glad to help.

Thank you so much for the help! The number of aftermarket accessories for these things is absolutely amazing. I ordered the headsets you suggested, and I will wait to make the cord and order that clutch cover until I get everything else situated. You guys have taken every ounce of uncertainty out of this process. I really appreciate the peace of mind that you have given me
