IMC headsets.....update

I sent an email to the sales department at IMC to ask about why the headsets don't work with the LT intercom system, and I received a reply.......first is the reply I got from them, and at the end is the long winded email I sent. I would encourage anyone who has purchased IMC headsets and found them not to work with their LT's comm system (that should be just about everyone) to email this guy Heeseok Lee about the incompatibility of their product with the BMW comm system. I think I'll ride up to port moody in BC and see if he can get it to work properly.....
Thanks, Rich Cannon

Subject: HS-B headset

Hello,
I am writing to find out what the problem is concerning the HS-B headset for BMW. I recently purchased the intercom headsets from Sierra electronics. I am amazed to find out that the microphones do not work with my BMW intercom system. How can your company promote and sell a product that is supposed to be compatible with the BMW, and it doesn't work? I am sending you a link to the BMW K1200LT website that pretty much spells out that your product does not work with the BMW comm system. I contacted Sierra electronics about the issue, and they said that the microphone was too high an inpedance to work with the BMW comm system, however they did not offer to take back the product or do anything about it....? I think that if you check it out you will find that the K1200LT is "THE" BMW ultimate long distance touring motorcycle. Designed specifically for 2 up touring, requiring an intercom system to be able to talk between rider and passenger. There is a large market there, and your product is priced to be very competitive in that market, with one exception.....Performance..It just doesn't work. I am baffled as to why you produce a product for a specific market, and then sell it knowing it doesn't work. I have already installed these headsets into my helmets, and am impressed at the improved sound of the speakers over the inexpensive J&M headsets, but come on....
I would love a response, I would be happy to post it on the BMW forum.

Re: IMC headsets.....update

Rich,

This past weekend I went to Swift Current, Saskatchewan where a company called Head To Head Communications is located. They sell the IMC headset which I purchased also for the LT (06) anyway I met with Brian the owner & we played with the setting & we were able to get some action on the intercom. I agreed to try more at home with the SO to see what we could do. But he also said he would look at getting the dynamic mic from a Goldwing (he owns a Goldwing & said that it woks great) set they are hardwired into the headset & have a plug installed & send it to me to see if that also makes the headset work better for the intercom.
I haven't had a chance to play with the setting yet but will also keep all posted.

I am holding off on buying an intercom, but I need one. I look forward to hearing the outcome on these issues.

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date.

Busajets.....What bike do you have? From what I have been able to discern, the IMC units work on some bikes, and not on others.

Re: IMC headsets.....update

I went through this with IMC in Feb, 2009.

I purchased their headsets and found out that the speakers worked OK, but the mics don't work for the LT system.

I went with J&M and everything worked out.

IMC knows there is a mic problem with their headsets and discussed with them in Feb.
returned them with no problem.

Re: IMC headsets.....update

IIRC, the BMW Intercom is (was) made by J&M, so no surprise J&M gear works. I believe the J&M mic is amplified, which was their little proprietary change to force the use of J&M equipment. Non-amplified mics simply don't work.

I just bought a '99 LT. The book says I have the BC1 system?? (I think)

I need to get something in the helmets so I can enjoy the perks of the bike. Maybe a few rides with Mama, and I will wish the intercom didn't work, but the music would.....

Re: IMC headsets.....update

Has anyone gotten the mic to work properly on these??

Sounds like the answer is no, but maybe someone has. What was done differently to get it to work??

Re: IMC headsets.....update

Well I don't know what is different on my 06 LT, but I have the IMC headset working. Only trouble I have had is the mic plg broke on my headset, but lastnight I had the SO talking to me & at first I had her doing the 'Whoooo' to trip the VOX, then when we started to ride it was tripping all the time adjusted her mic setting to 6 on the VOICE II & it works without 'Whooo'. The only thing was her voice wasn't that loud into my helmet but I;m thinking that might be because her mouth is over 1" from the mic (I have the cord mic not the flex unit)

Will try to adjust her mic more to see what happens.

Funny as I have an 06 as well but am not able to get any joy. I have the MIT100 system from IMC but obviously use the headsets along with the BMW cord. I will try the the mic setting to 6 to see if that is the trick.

Good question Mugszy, might have something to do with that yours is their Intcom system! But you would think they would be using the same mic. As I said the guy I talked to said the Goldwing mic is a dynamic mic (powered) I'm still hoping that he will send me one to test.
