Autocom PTT problems

I am having problems with my Autocom and I'm 99% sure its the PTT switch. The unit itself is mounted under the seat of my 1150GS and I'm running a Yaesu VX6R ham radio with it.

Since first installing the Autocom, I had great audio reports when talking into a local 2 meter repeater. My only problem was that wind noise would occasionally trip the repeater. Any sneeze or cough did the same. I decided that I needed a PTT switch to prevent this.

After installation, the audio reports were not quite as glowing. Many complained of excessive "static" in my signal. It may or may not have been ignition noise. I added ferrite beads to my antenna line, the power cable for the transceiver and the main Autocom line running to the radio.

Over the past couple of weeks, the static got worse. People could not hear me when I was in places that I could be heard from recently.

Last night, the PTT switch just stopped working. I took it out of line and went back to the direct connection from the Autocom to the transceiver. My audio reports went back to "wow! great audio".

Obviously, I need to fix the switch, but once that is done, I need to figure out why there is so much more noise in my transmissions. Any ideas? Do I need to add ferrite beads on the PTT extensions? I'd appreciate any help.

Re: Autocom PTT problems

If the PTT was purchased new it should be warrantyable, I would say the PTT is running by some electrical interference on its way to the unit. Call me 918-446-2245
I will try to warranty the PTT. Kieth

Re: Autocom PTT problems

As is usual, I figured out the answer and its much more simple than I feared. It appears as if there is enough surface rust on the contacts for the PTT interface that it caused all the problems. I plugged it in and out several times and not only did the PTT work again, I'm getting better audio reports. I haven't gone out to buy the contact cleaner or dielectric grease yet, but this seems to be the issue. If its something else, I'll post back.

Thanks for your offer Keith. I'm glad I didn't have to take you up on it.

Re: Autocom PTT problems

The connection for the PTT to the Autocom is under the seat with my setup. I found that it was necessary to tape the two connectors together in order to secure them from coming disconnected. It may also help prevent moisture intrusion.

Now my only problem is the 3-position switch does not want to work in the VOX position (switch to the left) where it just continuously triggers transmit instead of VOX'ing. Does yours work correctly?

Re: Autocom PTT problems

If I flip it to the left, it keys the mic open. If I flip to the right, its in VOX. The center is PTT. At least that's how mine works. I am having a hard time with the VOX position as the toggle doesn't want to stay to the right.
