Headset recommendations

I just bought a new Arai full-face helmet for my LT and need to outfit it with a quality headset. I've searched through this forum, but couldn't come up with clear recommendations. There is talk about soldering titanium speakers from Radio Shack. But what is a good quality headset that I purchase without modifying it?

Quality is the prime factor.

Cheers - Jack

This would really depend on what comm system you are using ??

I'm using the standard as-installed BMW comm system they installed in the 2000 LTs - I think it was called COM1 or something like that (I don't have my manual handy)

If you have a Com 2 or Com 3 you would use J&M headsets. For the Com 1 I'm not sure...

I looked at the J&M Elite which looks pretty good. What about all this talk about titanium speakers and such?

I haven't heard any stock headset that sounds that great so I think when you are reading about people that change the earphone speakers that is what they are improving. A lot of folks have used Radio Shack headphones that they take apart and replace the stock phones with.

Headsets are usually matched to the specific intercom. It's more of a mic issues than a speaker issue though.

Some headsets used smaller, cheap speakers that lacked any bass and sounded tinny. Autocom, Starcom, IntaRide, and other low-end intercoms often did this to save money. Replacing these speakers with a larger diameter, higher quality speakers such as those scavenged from the Radio Shack Titanium headphones resulted in much better sound overall, in the same relative space in the helmet.

Higher end intercoms such as Baehr and the J&M Elite series used better speakers from the factory, so upgrading those isn't really necessary.

I'm sure someone with a Com1 will chime in, but I believe you can use the higher quality J&M headsets with your intercom.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Hey Jack, I've been wanting to try some speakers from roadriderswearhouse.com (aerostich)but haven't got around to it yet, if you want to you could order some try them out and give us a full report. I'm currently using the radio shack headphone speaker's they work alot better than the stock speakers, but still not enough bass for me.

Are you talking about the $57 3D Bass Speakers? What would I do about a mic? Actually, I hadn't thought about building my own headset - that could be fun, but it's the connectors that are a problem.
