Garmin 2730 died during map upgrade

I tried to upgrade my lifetime maps onto the 2730, which I've done several times before, and it seems the unit died. When I turn it on, I get a "Upgrading Maps" note on the bottom of the screen, but it never progresses. When I attach the unit to my computer via USB and use the Garmin update software, the computer doesn't "see" the unit. Any suggestions on what to do now, besides replacing the whole thing? Right now I can't use the 2730 on the bike or in my car ... the start-up never gets past the Upgrading Maps phase. That means no GPS, no XM radio either.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Have you tried connecting with a different USB cable, I had camera that had trouble being recognized by the computer once and it turned out to be a bad usb cable.

Re: Garmin 2730 died during map upgrade

Resetting it might sort the problem out. You will loose all data so this is a last resort. I just did a quick search and found two different sets of instructions. You could try both. There could be others.

The 1st - turn the unit off, then hold down the menu and map buttons, simultaneously, then turn the unit back on and continue to hold down the buttons down for at least five more seconds, then the unit will power up. At that point it's like the unit is being used for the first time and you will have to reset everything.

The 2nd - 1. Locate the power switch on the right side of the StreetPilot 2730 and switch it to the off position. It is a rocker switch and is clearly marked with the on and off positions. 2. Switch the power switch to the on position and allow the GPS to load. Press and hold the "FIND" bottom on the face of the unit until a system message appears on the screen. 3. Wait for the system message "Do you want to clear all data?" to appear on the screen, then press the "Yes" button. The GPS will now reset, clearing all data from the system and resetting everything back to the factory settings.

Hope that helps.

Re: Garmin 2730 died during map upgrade

Thanks for the recommendations. I had already tried both of those, and, in fact, just tried them again. Didn't work. I bought a used one from eBay for $99. It works, but the touch screen is a little tricky, not like new. So I'm vaguely thinking about replacing it with something new, like the Zumo, because a) I want the GPS and XM combination, b) I shift the unit between my car and my LT, and c) I'll pick up Bluetooth. Of course that will require a re-wiring of the power cord which will require removing the tupperware. Not my favorite task.

Re: Garmin 2730 died during map upgrade

Some of the 27series had weak USB connection. If you have one that the USB works, you can take the non working one apart and see if you can take the working USB pc from one and install it in the other?

Or, if you only use the USB for map updates, I use MapQuest to figure out routes and then load them into my 665, you can temp wire in a USB port from gear you don't use or cut up a male female USB cable.

If you had to buy the map update and call Garmin to ask for trouble shooting help, if they determine the new map never made it into your unit, they might refund what you paid, if you bought it from them.

sometimes i've had to delete the Garmin USB drive, reboot my comp and then down load a driver.

I recently updated the maps in my Nav III and now they won't load. The unit goes into a loop of load attempt, fail, load attempt, fail, etc.

This happened once before and I thought I had found a way to do a soft reset that didn't clear out all of the data. I think it was on the BMWMOA site which at the moment appears to be done for maintenance.

Is option 1 above the soft reset or does it require reloading of the maps and updating of the firmware? Is there a lesser option to try first?

Re: Garmin 2730 died during map upgrade

Thanks for trying to help. I tried both those methods already. When I turn on the unit I get a "loading maps" message at the bottom of the screen, and a red "progress" bar. That bar goes about 25% of the way and just stops. The system is locked. I think its little mind got blown when I tried to upgrade the maps, a procedure I've done successfully several times over the years. Time to go shopping on eBay to see if I can find a good used one.

Re: Garmin 2730 died during map upgrade

Consider talking with Garmin to see if your lifetime up grades will follow to a new unit since their update killed ur unit?

Re: Garmin 2730 died during map upgrade

Yeah, the unit that died was actually my second one. I bought the first one new in '06(?) and it lasted for about five years. Then the touch screen quit and Garmin said tough shit. So I bought a used one on eBay that came with lifetime updates. I used that two or three times without a problem. Then I got a little Garmin wristwatch I wear when I workout. That came with a link to a Garmin website. When I tried again to upload new maps to the 2730 everything seemed to work. But when I turned the unit on it went into a "loading maps" mode and froze. So it never fully turns on. I'm thinking that the website blew its mind. And, because he unit is old technology and out of warranty I suspect Garmin will give me the same tough shit response. So now I'm shopping eBay again. What I want is a combo gps and xm radio, just like the 2730.

Not the first time I've heard this happening, and it also happened to me. Don't understand what it is in the process of map upgrading, and I'd hate to think that ......... , but doesn't seem to be a uncommon failure.

Re: Garmin 2730 died during map upgrade

Does the 2730 have an SD card? I had trouble with my Zumo 665 and the lifetime updates...I too got the endless loading/failure message. Although my unit still would come on, I lost all map coverage and POI data except the interstates (tough to find this out when you are 2K miles from home After many hours of trying to update, I finally removed the SD card...the updates installed seamlessly and all maps and POI data was restored! Worth a try if your unit has a memory card.

If that doesn't work, try a larger capacity SD card. I updated the maps on my Nuvi 1490LMT only to find, after the old maps were purged, that there wasn't enough memory storage for the update. Only option was to buy an SD card for more storage. Now, I'm not the brightest bulb on the porch, but wouldn't it make sense for Garmin to check storage requirements to storage available *before* starting the update?
