Painting a BMR Co-pilot Shelf

A thread discussing this started last fall, and I recently pulled the trigger on a rattle can to change the shelf color to match the 05 & 06 dash paint. To pass the comments on to everyone else - I checked with the dealer for the actual BMW (Magnesium is the color name) spray to be told 2-3 weeks delivery and $21.50/can here in Canada, and since I would probably need two of those small cans I decide to look elsewhere for a match. Home Depot has a spray can of epoxy for appliance touch-up called "Stainless Steel" under the Rustoleum name in the stores in Canada, and at $6.89 for a large can and a "very very" close match to the original it sure beats BMW parts.

The results are excellent with three to four quick succession coats, and the match may even be better if I applied a coat of satin finish clear on top. If the inevitable stone chips on the lower engine spoiler panels get to me in a year or so I would not hesitate to use the same paint for an over spray - the match is that good. Oh yea the shelf looks great with the match to the dash, and the speedo area even appears a little brighter on dull days due more reflected light from the underside of the lighter colored shelf.

Hmmm, that's interesting. I found a Toyota paint last year that is also a very close match - Canadian Tire sells it. Can't remember the paint/model/year and I don't have access to it at work. If I remember tonight, I'll look it up and post a message with the info.

OK, so it has been quite some time since you posted it, but I saw it for the first time today. Great idea that looks great. I'm off to get some for my Co-Pilot tomorrow!

Cheers.
