GPS noise

Hi guys, buying all the stuff to install a 2610 GPS on my 02 LT. The guy that's gonna help me was wondering if you need some kindof ground wire with a box in it for the GPS wiring to eleminate noise on my audio system. Says he knows some of the other BMW's require it. I'm using the garmin mc kit. I told him I would find out, so help please. Thanks in advance.

My 2730 makes just the tiniest bit of noise when starting up but when it finishes booting it quiet's right down. I'd try it without anything first and you can always get a noise choke and put on it later. I don't think you'll have any problem.

Good Luck,

What intercom are you using?

I had no significant noise with my Nav II (rebadged 2610) with either a ComSystem or a Voice II and the factory harnesses. I'm pretty sure the Nav II/Voice II harness has a built-in noise suppression device, but I don't recall having one in the ComSystem cable.

Anyway, don't assume noise is a "given" with these systems; in fact, the only noise issue I ever ran across was a StreetPilot III installation in which I mistakenly connected the speaker ground, rather than letting the speaker ground through the GPS's power ground. Once the speaker ground was disconnected (i.e., only three wires hooked up -- +12V, gnd, speaker +), no problems. The factory harnesses make even this error impossible with the latest systems.
