BMW Announces The Navigator V

BMW Press Release

Looks like the same basic dimensions and mount as the Navigator IV (and zümo 660 & 665), but with a larger 5" screen. Interesting . . .

All lower 48 states plus Alaska on the K13GT in two weeks . . .

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Would be nice to upgrade my Nav II with a IV or V.

they say its functions have been tailored specifically for the rider's needs. How do they know what my needs are? Nobody polled me.

Does this mean Garmin will be releasing a new Zumo with a 5" screen? I still think that base camp can be a pain in the a$$.

Re: BMW Announces The Navigator V

They do have the new Zumo 390LM that even has a TPMS capability but it looks nothing like the Nav V.

I saw the 390 but the TPM on it relies on caps that you screw onto the stem, not sure I would trust them. They expanded the bluetooth capabilities to support cell phones which is nice as well as some routing options that include picking curvy roads. My TomTom app has that option and the only problem with it is that it seems to take me down a few gravel roads.

I visited the local (BMW) dealer yesterday and got the scoop from Jessica, who had just come back from training where they covered the Nav V, and she got to work with it a bit.

First of all she was told that this is a special BMW-only unit and would not find its way to Garmin's product line in that exact form...as has been the case for all other Navs until now, AFAIK. That is not good news as far as I'm concerned, as I would like to stay in Garmin's mainstream; their software/configuration management process doesn't seem up to handling all of their different units as is, so my preference would be to be using one of their highest volume devices. Oh well.

Jessica said the unit would fit into the 1600 cradle with some kind of adapter/bezel to account for the different size.

She said the screen was "much better" than the Nav IV in terms of brightness/viewability. And of course it is bigger, too.

It's from BMW & Garmin, two companies that obviously know what you need much better than you do . . .

Re: BMW Announces The Navigator V

I've heard that Garmin is using a new screen technology that's much better in terms of reflectivity/daylight readability. Haven't seen one yet, but moving up to a 5" screen has to help, too.

The K16's GPS dash bezel is a $42 piece, so that should be pretty easy to swap out if they make one with a slightly larger screen opening.

Thanks, that explains it.

Any info on availability?

Re: BMW Announces The Navigator V

It looks like it might have more internal memory:

"The new trip technology featured by the Navigator 5 defines the state of the art with regard to route planning and routing. It allows the user to create longer and more detailed tours with up to 3,750 shaping points per trip."

"The Navigator V is available for € 750.00 incl. VAT in Germany."

Given that the hardware design of the Nav IV/660 is (many) years old, I would expect the V to have significantly more memory, significantly more storage, a much faster CPU, and a much better display.

Re: BMW Announces The Navigator V

I will be getting at least 1 for either the K1600 or the R1200GSW. In 2011 I traded in my LT. It was a good bike for the time that I had it. It took my across country once and up to Alaska.

Re: BMW Announces The Navigator V

I'll get one as soon as I'm assured that the screen will show up noticeably better than the Nav 4. Otherwise, it's a trade to another one that I can't see most of the time!
