City Navigator North America v7

I have a BMW Navigator (Street Pilot III) with a 256 MB data card. When I was using V6.0, I was able to plan long trips and usually got all of the route onto the 256 MB chip. Now that I have upgraded to V7.0, the map sections available to choose are much larger, sometime the entire state. This is making it difficult (impossible) to get a long trip out west onto my 256 MB chip.

Does anyone make a larger data card for the Street Pilot III? The Garmin site list the 256MB card as the largest they sell. Is there a way to decrease the map segment sizes to choose from V7.0?

Boy, I was hoping I could use this BMW Navigator until I get my next bike. I really don't cherish the PIA of upgrading to a newer GPS.

Have the same problem, try it with a 128 card. Think the 256 card is the largest. I guess we can always go back to V6 or carry multiple cards.

Unfortunately, 256 is the largest size the SPIII will take.

Did you upgrade yours from a smaller Mem. Cart.? If so, use the previous one to store part of the trip on. I did that with mine once, I only had a 256 that I had bought, and the 128 that came with the unit. You do have to plan a point where it will be convenient to swap out the cartridges on your trip, with the overlap region on each, but that is not difficult. In any case, buying another cartridge is certainly minimal expense compared to upgrading to anther GPS.

I just went through the same thing on my Nav I. I talked to Garmin and they don't make a card larger than 256MB for the SPIII series, AND they are proprietary so you can't use anything else. I did solve the problem, though. I bought a factory refurbished Garmin 2610 with full factory warranty! Got it for $390 on eBay from a reseller. Bought a 2 GIG CF card and I can carry the entire V7 map set with about 400 MB left over.

As for the PITA to upgrade. GPS City makes a wiring harness for the 2610 so you can easily get power to it, and it has the audio connector integrated ito it. I haven't installed mine yet (next weekend I think). I have a Motolocker I mount the GPS and V1 on, and they make a bracket for the 26xx/27xx series. Not plug & play, but not too onerous a proposition.

Thanks

Thanks to both Davids,

I do have the 256 MB and the 126 MB data cards, so I should be able to get everything for my trip to Utah on both cards. It's a shame, though. I could get everything but the Dallas part of Texas, for the entire trip, on the 256 MB card. So I guess I reorganize and put just Utah, Colorado and Arizona on the 126 MB card. I'll have to change cards when I get to AZ and again when I leave CO. It's not too big of a PIA.

The V7.0 mapping is markedly improved over the V6.0, at least around here. I tried it out today and it works great. With the V6.0, the GPS map had my house about one block from where it actually is. With the V7.0, it's right on the money (even shows me turning into my driveway). I'm thinking that there will be a lot of improvements throughout the US with V7.0. It's just ashame they didn't make the map sizes smaller with V7.0 like they did with V6.0. That way, you could get exactly what you needed for a particular trip on the 256 MB card.

I'll probably keep my 2002 LT until the new ones come out in 2008, then I'll upgrade. I found a 256 MB Garmin card on the net for $86.00, so I guess I'll be getting another one soon.

David, please let me know how your swap to the newer model goes. I think I have the BMW Com II (came with the bike as an LTE). So, I don't really know how much trouble it would be to rewire for the new one.

Exclamation MapSource ver 6.10.2?

I could be wrong . . . but I hope I'm not, for all your sake. I just upgraded my MapSource to the latest version (v 6.10.2) and it appears to me that the maps have been broken up into smaller sections. Like I said, I could be wrong. I have a 2GB card, so I have the whole N. America on it. But I just loaded a 128mb card with some local maps and it seems that I had to choose more than I first did a few MapSource versions ago.

Thumbs up

Joe,

I've been trying to understand this upgrade thing with MapSource. I've emailed them 5 or 6 times over the past week and currently have a running dialog with a guy named Nathan, at Garmin. From what he has told me, this is how I understand it. The free MapSource upgrades do not upgrade the maps, just the software that is used to process the maps. So, the map set is different with V7.0, than it is the V6.0 (that's why you have to purchase another unlock code for V7.0). You can get the free software upgrades to 6.10.2 for both V7.0 or V6.0. At least, that's what I think he is telling me.

I upgraded to the DVD V7.0 today and the maps appear to be far superior to V6.0, from what little I got to use it today. I noticed many corrections and street additions in my local area around Columbus, GA.

I understand all of that...
What I am asking you to do is make sure that the version of MapSource that is on your PC is the current version 6.10.2. In MapSource, click on Help at the top, then click on 'Check For Software Updates'. It's worth a try.

Thanks Joe,

I did that this afternoon and the map sizes are bigger when I select V7.0 from drop down list in the left upper corner. If I choose V6.0 from the drop down list, they are small just like they used to be. I'll look again to be sure.

I do realize the ver 7 maps are bigger than ver 6's, but it seems that they've gotten smaller lately . . . if that makes any sense. I was just thinking that maybe enough people are complaining so Garmin did something about it.

What maps are you trying to load? GA, I presume?

Does the attached pic line up with what you're seeing in your MapSource?

Exclamation Another suggestion . . .

You can mix and match ver 6 maps (for areas that you don't need the latest details) and ver 7 maps on the same data card. Just toggle back & forth using the drop down box in MapSource to grab a few of the smaller maps from ver 6.

I'm taking a trip from Columbus, GA to southern Utah and southwestern CO in June. I'm loading the Columbus area (but get all of southern GA), then Birmingham, AL (get all of AL because I get the northern AL with Birmingham and southern AL with Mobile). I only need northeast Mississippi to Memphis, TN, but get the entire state of Mississippi. I only need the narrow strip along I40 to Flagstaff, but get most of every state in between. I need all of southern Utah and southwestern CO, but get all of Utah and the western half of CO. I am having the same problem with the return route through El Paso, San Antonio and Houston (ended up with most of TX). I would like to add the I-20 route through TX, just in case I decide to go that way but do not have room on the 256 MB card. I then go on to New Orleans, Mobile and back to Columbus, GA. I only need another 17 MB to get the entire trip on one card, but the 256 card is 17MB short of what I need.

With the V6.0, I could get all of the routes I might travel with room left over on the 256 MB card.

That's weird! When I pick the same maps you did, I get 10 maps, 157.6 MB. That's with City Navigator North America V7.0 and MapSource 6.10.2. That's really, really weird!

Joe,

I'm using the Street Pilot III (BMW navigator) GPS. I believe I remember you saying that you are using the 2610 or 2620. I wonder if the compression format is different for the two GPSs.

Seems like, as I remember it,when I ordered the 7.0 DVD, I had to order the one specific for the Street Pilot III.

Just to throw another wrench in there. Someone posted last month that version 8.0 is due out in April. I had ordered version 7 before that post and have been holding off on getting the unlock code till I see if version 8 comes out. Wonder how the maps will be configured with that update.

Dick,

I get the same thing 157.6 Meg, Map Source ver 6.9.1. Using a 2610 as well. Joe must have some magic memory that shrinks the map size.

If you do not need the detail - ie staying on main roads - just leave off the detail maps. The base maps will contain all you need. This might save you enough memory storage to put the entire trip onto 1 card.

Yea, but I'm seeing now that I didn't have the little box checked next to "Include Route Calculations...". That may be why mine is smaller in file size. I dunno.

Yes the route calculation data is a must for auto routing. Also that sucker sucks up additional memory. When I toggle between the MS V6 to V7 The map detail does not propagate.
