Garmin Maps North America - Help

I will be visiting the US next year and riding an RT for a month.
The company that ive rented the bike from are assisting me with route planning but once ive got that nailed down I want to be able to take and use my GPS which the rental company has said that they will help me fit.
I have done a little googling in relation to buying Garmin CityMaps N.A. but it seems like it comes on an SD card thats meant to be loaded straight into the unit, is that correct?
I either need to plot my maps in Mapsource here before I go or buy a new 660 when I arrive and do the plotting there.
Problem with second scenario is finding a PC to use.
Can anybody tell me if the SD card is the way it comes and if so how does it upgrade the MapSource software.

Re: Garmin Maps North America - Help

It will help us to know what Garmin unit you have.

I have the NAV III and all updates are done over the web through my Mac Pro laptop. The NAV III came with a USB cable and a power supply so you can run it off your computer.

You can grab and update most software front the http://www.garmin.com web site if you have your device usb connected. The first time, Garmin will load a browser extension on IE, Firefox or Safari (and probably Chrome) to allow they web site to read the device and its serial number.

After that, all the common tools are free, from web updater to Road Trip, Base Camp and the Map Install program.

US/Canada Map Updates are about 1.8 Gb, so you need to have a fairly good internet connection when you pull them down.

However, some devices may work with SD cards too.

Thanks mate, that is definetely an option but if I buy it while Im there, I will need to be able to load the MapSourse software onto a PC so that I can plot the route.
My first few days will be in San Francisco which is where Im picking the bike up from.
Im fairly sure that my hotel wont allow me to load software onto any of their in house guest PC's.
Have a great Xmas Andrew.

When are you coming?
I'm located 90 miles inland from SF and if I'm not using my Garmin 2610 you could borrow it.
Or purchase and download to your GPS off my computer.

I also have spare room and happy to help with route ideas.
