GPS decision is driving me crazy! Please Help

OK I have a worthless nav 1 on the bike. I want to know which way to go Garmin 2820 or Zumo 665. I want to use the existing mount the nav 1 is in. I want to be able to hook it up to the bmw intercom thats on the bike. I want the blue tooth and the XM radio. I have been looking at post on this site and not finding the info i want. I saw one post that stated with one of the zumo's you had to purchase an antenna for the xm feature for what seemed a very high price tag. I know the 2820 is not supported by garmin any longer but maps are still avail to update.Do I need to buy a cradle for either one or both to mount on the same mount as the nav 1. Other post have comparison between other units but not these two. Please chime in and give me pro's and con's of these units.

Re: GPS decision is driving me crazy! Please Help

I had a 2820 until it locked up and wouldn't work any longer. Garmin upgraded me to a Zumo 550, but it didn't cost too much. I don't think the 2820 will function like the BMW NAV system, even if it fits in the cradle. I have heard that the buttons on the cradle won't work with the 2820. I don't know if it would work with the intercom system. The 665 is a recent model and might be the way to go. As my "old man's eyes" got worse, I sometimes had trouble reading the upcoming street names on the 2820. The 550 and I'm assuming the 665 have a larger screen, so it's readable. HTH

Re: GPS decision is driving me crazy! Please Help

I have been riding with a Zumo 665 since I got it this past Christmas. It has become my regular riding companion. I did not have a GPS on the bike before I got the 665. I used the mount provided with the unit. I mounted it on the left handle bar and trimmed the handlebar cover. I routed the wires under the handlebar cover and under the left side fairings. Currently it has a fused connection to the battery but I may change that at a later date. The other connections I routed into the oddment box. The XM antenna I mounted where I believe your current GPS is located. I use Velcro to hold it in place and run the wire on the outside of the stingray to the oddment box. Mounting it this way makes it easier to disconnect and transfer to another vehicle. When riding I use a Scala Rider G4 with the Bluetooth all the time to listen to XM, the GPS instructions and my iPhone. The XM antenna is provided with the kit so you do not have to purchase it separately. It is expensive and at times I wish I had a second antenna for the car but it is easy to disconnect and transfer. I find that I rarely use the bike's audio system with this configuration. I recommend that you visit zumoforums.com

Re: GPS decision is driving me crazy! Please Help

The ZUMO is waterproof, has a battery for off bike motel or house planning use, better screen for use with gloves, and has and SD card slot for extra waypoint storage and additions map/music/photo features. My Zumo 450 is 4 years old and still performs flawlessly, but if I had to upgrade it would be to another ZUMO.

I've heard that the Zumo's after the 550 have had substantial problems. You might want to read up before plunking down $800 for one. The 550 seems to be the gold standard.
