Garmin 665 won't work with droid or scala?

My 2820 died on the road. Garmin says the Zumi 550 or 665 will not work with the droid or the scala headset.

Anyone know for sure?

I don't think the guy I talked to was at the top of his class, if you know what I mean.....

Why am I here and what day is it??

I have Garmin 550 and it pairs just fine with the Scala 4 that I use.

That is because with a Droid you don't need a Garmin. The dedicated GPS is dieing slowly.

You might just be right there. I should also look into mounting the Droid on there and just having a power cord for it.

I just like having the bigger screen to see at speed.

More info. is needed......

I just started looking at android tablets, some of them really have cool features. If they have a gps antenna one can download appterra----a really detailed topo maping system, 3d more info than garmin on off hwy stuff, I also noticed garmin just released a app for apple, maybe android will be next... the dedicated gps may die off soon..

Re: Garmin 665 won't work with droid or scala?

Check out my avatar. I tossed my Garmin years ago and built a "BikePC". Of course there is a lot more than GPS on it. Anyone who has followed my exploits knows I am building systems for sell [eventually and if I can find backing].

I does not make sense to me to pay $1000 for a GPS that plays music and answers your phone for you. Mine does all of this plus facilitates communication, tells me where the thunderhead is (real time at no cost), and sends a 911 call or a SARSAT signal if I crash.

But wait, there's more...

My latest system uses my Droid as a UI and control. Inside the bike the is a x64 computer, built rugged for the environment, running Ubuntu, which does the heavy lifting. It has a 7 inch sunlight-readable rugged display, telemetry, infotainment, and navigation.

To be honest, the system has cost me more than $1000 (much more), but most of this was in tooling for production.

With the introduction of the iPhone and the Android platform, everything has changed in vehicle gadgetry. Indeed, I had to remodel my business to plan for what is about to come.

I started in technology in the mid '70s. This revolution of Droid-like products is so profound a change that it is comparable to the introduction of the first PC's. Companies like Garmin that build single-purpose devices will either evolve or disappear.

Open is in.
