Re: Life time maps

A good deal if you don't plan to get a new GPS soon. It's tied to one GPS.

Re: Life time maps

I think lifetime maps are a bad idea.

If they are tied to your currant GPS you should know that after 3 or 4 years the GPS you are using will be obsolete or otherwise fail.

It is cheaper and better to keep buying the new models (with new maps).

HuH?!?!?

Maybe if you're referring to cheap car units that only cost less than $200 (some less than $100) ... but my 2820 retailed for over $1,000. Most GPS's designed for bikes are pretty darn expensive. I surely would've paid $69 for lifetime maps for my 2820. That unit lasted me 3 years, and the only reason I sold it was because a forum member wanted one. I don't need it now that it is winter, and I'll be getting a new GPS for the riding season next Spring.

So to say that it's "cheaper" to buy a new $500-$1000 GPS every year is just not accurate. But to get new maps every year for just a one-time fee of $69 is a NO BRAINER.

Re: Life time maps

There is this little catch: it's not YOUR lifetime, but the lifetime of your GPS device. And the duration of this "lifetime" is something that is determined by... GARMIN! So think before you buy. Don't use this on your BMW Navigator III, since went obsolete when the IV came out.

As long as it uses the current NT format maps you're good. If you get more than one map update you're good.

Re: Life time maps

I use a 255WT in my work truck that I bought 2 years ago for around $160.00. Then a up date last year for about $50.00. Now we have a bunch of new roads that are not on my GPS so I will need another upgrade. So for $20.00 more then the cost of a 1 year upgrade I get 3 upgrades a year till my GPS dies. Sounds like a good deal to me. The GPS on my bike is 4 years old and works fine & it gets abused regularly. The one in my truck should last years.

Re: Life time maps

So Michael, did you download the map update yet? I've got a 2820 w 2009 maps and am thinking about updating. How much time did it take to download. Did the maps change in appearance as well? Just curious on that after looking at the images of the maps.

Thanks,

Up dates stopped on the 2730 December 2009. It still works fine, but they consider it's life time over.

Thanks,
Both my GPSs are on 'my garmin' registered and valid for updates. I did the 2720 and the 2820 to the current maps using the life time updates. Downloads did take a long time even on DSL. If you got dial up it would take a life time. Maps didn't change appearance, the roads did though, mine was over two years old and we had some roads change on us. A lot of POI changes too. Also for the first time both my GPSs have the same maps. Glad I did it.

I too was considering the "lifetime" maps.............but after several e-mails to Garmin, and getting nothing but really evasive answers.......,AND reading a BUNCH of the reviews......I think I'll pass on this.

I got the update for my 2720. For $69 it was a non-issue deal. The roads keep changing, restaurants die or change, gas stations too. If you really use your GPS, you MUST keep it up-to-date.

The issue is the 'Updates' keep getting BIGGER! In a year or so, my 2720 will likely be unable to accept the newer file sizes. But, I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

For now, I'm delighted.

Be sure and let us know how many of those new roads and restaurants are not updated..... Ater reading all the reviews about these updates and how NOT accurate they are after even 2 or 3 years.......I think you may be surprised. I think a sure fired test would be to pick 2 or 3 things that weren't correct with your current GPS and see if they have been corrected in the update. Personally I couldn't tell if the update was anymore accurate or not........

BaH! Not mentioning any names, but there's several States I'd leave out before I left Canada out.

Re: Life time maps

I purchased the Lifetime updates for my 2820 and downloaded the map update to my computer. I then went in and loaded the maps (had to select only some because of size limitations on the 2820), things loaded up well, but now I have two POIs listed for those that were already on the 2009 version. Did anyone else notice this issue and how or what can I do to remove one of the two listings.

Thanks for any help on this.

My first attempt on the 2820 said it couldn't fit the maps so I deleted all the favs and the mp3s. Did not run into your duplicate favs issue. My 2820 now holds just maps. I'm using a ipod for the mp3s.

Thanks. I see I still have the 09 Maps on my 2820, so I changed the settings and disabled the 09 maps and no more duplicates. I had deleted all my music but still couldn't fit the entire 11 map update. Did you delete the earlier maps as well or are yours still in there somewhere?
