Cool SP3 to 2720 Upgrade

To All:

I know this issue would probably better fit in the GPS forum but I wanted a broader view on this from the "Large" board

I am attempting to upgrade from a SP3 to a 2720 on my LT with a BCS-3. My BMW service guy said that BMW or Garmin didnt make any connectors to interface the two like the SP3 had but we could go to the Aux connector in the oddments box. I really wanted to have the same kind of connections since over the last 9 years everything has worked great (Comm Wise) and I think you loose audio control just using the Aux connector.

Anyway my question is that since I already have the wiring harness for the SP3 connected to the BC-3 would it be possible to connect both the female 2.5mm of the 2720 wiring harness to the existing SP3 leads under the light and have everything work as before?

I already have cut the cord caps off the harness of the SP3 (Round Headed 4 pin Lead with separate 90 deg 2.5mm Mono Jack) that extends out of the light above the "speedo" and have plenty of slack. I just need to unsheathe the bundle and determine which leads to connect to the new 2720 2.5mm female connector. I have read on the GPS sub forum that its the Brown (+) and White (-) that works here.

If there were another new complete wiring harness that I can purchase to accomplish this I could do also but I couldnt find one.

Thanks in advance for any help the board can provide.

Axle:

I already have that little Item. If I get your drift here if I add the 2.5mm mono jack back to my SP3 it should plug right in and work?

What I need to do is get a brand new SP3 / BMW wire harness. Now I havent seen that one yet and if you have any bright Ideas let me know

Thanks

Steve A.

Re: SP3 to 2720 Upgrade

I can't give you the specifics as I went from the SP3 to a 2820 on my 2002 K1200LT that then goes into an Autocomm, but on mine, I just routed the new power cord that came with the 2820 and plugged in the audio connection.

It probably took about an hour and I was done. I also used the same windshield, through the light bracket. A great improvement except when the sun is behind me and washes out the screen.

Re: SP3 to 2720 Upgrade

Just to update those interested.

I have the 2720 installed and it works great using the SP3 wire bundle with the pigtail removed. although I cant get rid of the "Buzz" that I get when something else goes off like my radar detector. I tried the radio shack isolation transformer but that didnt work either.

I have forgotten all of my very early "ET" skills so I guess I will have to live with this problem for a while. Well at least until the new GT arrives LOL

I hear ya on the forgotten part. Went through that recently myself. But towards the end it started coming back to me. I figure the long term memory will eventually catch what the short term one can't.

Unhappy Re: SP3 to 2720 Upgrade

To All:

I guess I should have made the upgrade when everyone else was doing it. Its pretty irritating since I have to pull in the clutch to allow the Rpm to get low enough for the buzz to stop after its started up.

You would think there was at least a half dozen people on this site who knew exactly how to solve this problem.

Apparently everyone who had this problem is old like me and forgot how they fixed it LOL

Worst case scenario is that I could replace the power cord with a new one and get a direct connect to the "Hot Battery Bus" and just connect to the Aux location in on the BCS if I needed to actually get voice routing. In this way I would have no "Bad" comm issues.

I might just do that unless someone actually has a better Idea.
