Zumo 665 Must be hooked up Switched

Apparantly Garmin changed the Zumo 665 from earlier models in that it draws .25 Amps even if completely turned off whenwired unswitched (thru a fuse block) or directly to the battery. If left on the bike in the cradle even with the key out and the unit off it will kill the battery.

We originally wired mine to a Centech Ap-2 on the unswitched side.

I left the Zumo off and the my forks locked (obviously key out) and it killed my battery overnight.

We tested with another 665 and it also drew .25 amps. so we know this is not a defective unit.

Moral of the story: Simply wire it switched.

That is good info to know... A friend was looking to put one of these on his RT.
I will make sure that he wires to a switcher circuit.

Re: Zumo 665 Must be hooked up Switched

Is there a "sticky" on the forum that instructs how to install the Zumo 665 and XM radio on an R1200RT so that the XM radio plays "in stereo" through the optional audio system?

I just bought a 2010 R1200RT with the optional audio system and just want to make sure it's done right even though I'll probably ask the dealer to install it.

Can't tell you as i have an '09 Rt without the OEM stereo system. I use a JM Corp. Bluetooth Stereo speakers and mic installed in my helmet.

Supposedly this got fixed with a firmware update. I'll soon find out, we just got a 665 and I'm going to hook it up to the battery. I'll let you know what happens!

Re: Zumo 665 Must be hooked up Switched

Update to my earlier post.

Hooked up the Garmin 665 directly to the battery and so far no problems. I've purposely left the Garmin 665 in the cradle just to make sure and give it every possible chance to drain the battery.

By the way, I'm really liking the Garmin 665 especially the radar on the NavWeather.

Re: Zumo 665 Must be hooked up Switched

Good to know. Mine drained my battery overnight whne we hooked it up unswitched. Although, no reason really to set it up unswitched since the Zumo gives you the option when you turn off the ignition to turn it off or conitnue on it's internal battery power.
