Garmin 2010 Maps Available

My GPS has been nagging me for about 3 months, and I checked again today to find that the Garmin site (http://www.mygarmin.com) has the 2010 maps out, which can't hurt, since I keep finding myself driving through corn fields and fording streams on the screen while driving down 2 year old highways.

Count on having to download a current free plug-in if you have changed browsers, as Gamin Web Apps want to validate your Garmin device's serial number.

They offer map updates three ways now - lifetime (of your device) updated on the web 4x per year; 1 year on DVD or 1 year updated over Internet. Be aware that the download is 2.35 Gb, so it may take a while.

So far, things are running well on Snow Leopard and the plug-in installed and ran correctly on Safari 4.

Re: Garmin 2010 Maps Available

I am actually doing this on the other laptop right now. You get a one time free upgrade when you buy a new unit. Garmin site said I needed to upload the new installer which didn't want to recognize my 660. Plugged and unplugged the unit a bunch of times until they wanted to play nice with each other.

I have Verizon's almost DSL and the projected time was right at 5 hours for the download. I have 33% downloaded with 3:12 to go so I'm ahead of schedule.

The 2.35 Gb took about an 50 minutes using Comcast of over wireless 55 Mb to the hub.

Re: Garmin 2010 Maps Available

Will these new maps work on my old Garmin "Street Pilot" style "BMW Motorcycles Navigator" GPS?

CAUTION! Be certain that the new map only shows up in the GPS map detail. Mine held three maps. I had to open the new map in Map Source select a very small section of map and send it to the device (GPS) and the new map was installed and only viewable. Also, to save CPU disk space, you may delete the downloaded .exe file AFTER you have installed it and proves to operate properly.

RAZMAN10 -

I do not know the answer to your question. They do require you to attach your GPS via USB to the PC so they can verify what Garmin you have. They might tell you then whther or not, but there is also a blog and forum on the mygarmin.com site.

Re: Garmin 2010 Maps Available

After you have the new version installed you can go into Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any old maps. I burned the .exe to a DVD, jotted down the Code number and then deleted it to save some disk space on the netbook.

That's nice; they make you spend the money only to find out that you can't use it!!! It ain't cheap either!

I'll check their forum.

Thanks Wildbil

Ray

Re: Garmin 2010 Maps Available

I did a "One Shot" on my long in the tooth 2820 about a month ago.

Easy way to do it. I went from version 8, to version 10.

Was a deal for me.

Did the same, Burned a DVD and recorded the number.

It was a bit more accurate in my local area for sure.
