confused - 2720 for 2002 LTE

All,

yes I know it's all there but after spending several hours searching last night I'm still confused...

bought a used 2002 LTE which has SP III installed. Unit has not been updated since 2002. Software update is $75 and all I have is one 64Mb card so I figure another $80 for a 256 card from ebay. That's more than $105 for a refurb 2720 from ebay which is supposed to come with City Navigator Software unlocked...

Is it true that all I need to make a 2720 work on my 2002 LTE is this cable
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=1055
then have a tupperware party and and the 2720 will all work fine, have power and talk to me through the ancient intercom?

Thanks all in advance.

I believe you are correct. Plus the mounting cradle. The 2730 uses a different cradle than SPIII. Abour $30. Still bolts to the same bracket on the bike.
I changed my 2003 to a 2730 few years ago.
You will see a huge difference between SP3 and 2720.

That and a couple of hours and you are done. I ran my power straight to the battery so I
could leave the GPS on at fuel stops.

Re: confused - 2720 for 2002 LTE

If you just bought the LT and can prove it, all you have to do is contact Garmin, submit the proof and they will give an update free of charge for the SPIII. That's what I did when I bought a used bike.

How did you go about that? I just bought my '02 LTE in October with the OEM SPIII and would love to be able to do that!

Re: confused - 2720 for 2002 LTE

I would go for the 2720..... I have an old SP III and it is s-l-o-w! Only real use id for getting me home when lost. It takes forever to recalculate when you miss a turn. It is a whole lot better than nothing, but before spending any money on it, go ahead and get the better processor inside the 2720.

Plus 1 on the 2720
Also I ran my power off the dash map light. You can turn the bike off but not all the way to lock position and the GPS will stay on. Then at the end of the day just lock the handle bars so the GPS turns off and then you don't have a dead battery the next time you get on the bike.

Hi George,
yeah this is what others said but did not work for me. I even registered the unit on the web page. They sent me a new software CD but it costs 75 to "unlock" it. The unlock code that came with the bike did not do the trick. The PO had all the original paperwork and software the only thing that works is the old 2002 regional stuff.

Thanks All,
these are all great suggestions. I like the idea of running the power off the map light. So I suppose the wires to that light are heavy gauge enough to take the xtra current?
Thanks,
Frank

I'd say that the wires to the GPS are LIGHT enough that pretty much anything could power it safely. The dash light power is more than adequate. I just did my 2820 that way.

Yes sir the GPS wires are TINY so you'll be fine running it off the map light

Re: confused - 2720 for 2002 LTE

I had all the paperwork and registered online, however, the PO had already registered it. So, I contacted Garmin customer service and informed that I am the new owner. At this time, I asked if there were any updates and the tech says there was an update but it was going to cost $75. I don't know where I heard it but I told the tech that I was the new owner and the Garmin policy was that the new owner can get the first update free of charge. He agreed and sent me the new update CD with the unlock code.

If the unlock code doesn't work, you will need to contact Garmin.

Good Luck!

Thanks. I'll give it try. I already got the locked 2009 software. The worst they can do is say no.

Re: confused - 2720 for 2002 LTE

Is the volume on the 2720 loud enough for highway speeds with helmet on?
I don't have a comm system on my bike.

don't know but would expect not loud enough. I can tell you once I have it installed (couple of weeks) but I cannot imagine it would be even close to loud enough.

Re: confused - 2720 for 2002 LTE

If I remember correctly, there is no internal speaker in the 2720 itself. You would have connect a set of earbuds to the back of unit to wear under your helmet or use the external cigarette power cable to get sound for you to hear while riding the LT if you don't have an intercom. To get the powered speaker close enough for you to hear, would require you adding another power connection in the cockpit and not use the connection down by your left foot. JM2CW.
