Can't acquire satellite signal

My Garmin 2820 has been perfect for almost 2 years until yesterday. Now it can not acquire a satellite lock. I have left it on for over 2 hours and still nothing. It says it is searching but finds nothing. Has anyone else encounted this issue? Unfortunately it is out of warranty too.

Re: Can't acquire satellite signal

Same thing just happed to me about a month ago on my Garmin 276c. I pulled the battery out for 5 minutes and then I restarted it again manually with choosing my location on the map. I then left it alone and it found itself in about twenty minutes. Been fine ever since

Re: Can't acquire satellite signal

I encountered the problem when I added a sun shield. The dang thing is made from a metallic sheet of something. Nice material to use on top of a GPS. I added an antennae and no issues since.

I'm sure you know that the 2820 needs to have a clear view of the sky. My Nuvi's work inside my house but not my 2820. Just trying to cover the bases, not meant to insult you.

Re: Can't acquire satellite signal

I have the orginial Navigator and can't get it to lock on either. The batteries are removed and i have it direct wired to the battery and it still will not lock on. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I have a 2003 with the Navigator as well: when I had that problem, it was a disconnected antenna connection (it looked connected but hadn't been tightened down). When I made sure it was fully connected, the problem went away.

If the "built-in" antenna is the problem (I don't have a clue where they mounted it), my bike came with a set of stuff that allowed it to be used in a car; that included a separate antenna (looks like a memory stick on steroids). If you have that, you might disconnect the built in antenna lead and try it with the free-standing antenna.

Re: Can't acquire satellite signal

Just curious if you did an online software update lately? I did a couple months ago and my 2730 wouldn't locate. Garmin replaced it with a remanufactured unit which just quit. I've sent that unit back and waiting for a "new" unit that was promised. Since the 2730 has been out of production for a couple years I'm not sure what "new" means to Garmin. Whatever... as long as I get a unit that works I'll be ok with it.

They did want me to try a manual "reset" on my 2730. Perhaps you can try that with yours, but be aware that it will wipe out all that isn't in the firmware (meaning any saved data or maps). By holding down two buttons at once (I think it was menu and find on mine) it will cycle through a refresh/flash menu. Mine was dead and it was worthless to try it.

Good luck with yours.

Re: Can't acquire satellite signal

Thanks for all of the suggestions but I tried all of them with no success. Here is what I have done so far:
  1. Checked for software update (there were none)
  2. Hard reset and reinstalled maps (no change)
  3. GPS actually works better inside of my house than on the dash of my truck.
    1. Thought it may be some sort of interference but it works the same with everything running in my truck as it does with everything off.
    2. It worked for 2 years in the exact same spot on my dash and no new electrical items have been added.
  4. I think it may be a bad connection to the antenna. I'm going to open it up and see what I can find. If that doesn't work then I'm going to buy an external antenna.

Re: Can't acquire satellite signal

I have a Garmin 376c with the same problem. I have done the following:
  1. Updated the internal software.
  2. Hard reset.
  3. New battery.
  4. External antenna.
Either plugged into power, or running off the battery, I can't get a Sat lock. It worked once about a month ago, and lately nothing. I get one gray bar on the screen for one signal coming in, so I know it is at least partially functioning.

It's painful having an $800 GPS sit idle like this.

Garmin offers a refurb of the unit for $176 on their service site. Anyone done this?

I would probably try this before I opened it up.

Thanks,

Dan
