What am I doing wrong? Garmin 2820

I spent the better of the last hour plus trying to download music to the 2820's MP3 feature.

Here's what I have done:

1) Load Garmin CD. Hook up 2820 to power and USB to PC. Turn on GPS select USB mass storage. I get the USB cord to PC picture on the GPS.

2) Load CD in CD drive and copy files to Garmin/MP3 Drive/folder

3) Eject (select USB mass storage /stop/Garmin) and unplug the USB.

4) Disconnect USB from GPS.

5) Turn off GPS and turn back on and select GPS mode.

6) Select Tools then MP3

7) Browse for the files I uploaded/downloaded and I see none of them. They still show up in the Garmin/MP3 folder on my PC.

What am I missing? I tried this with both refurbished 2820 kits I received this week.

Re: What am I doing wrong? Garmin 2820

Are you sure you are loading mp3 files from the CD? If you are transferring files from a commercial CD, they are not in MP3 format. If that is the case, load the music first into iTunes which is free (or other music playing software). Then convert the imported music to MP3 files. Load those mp3's to your 2820(s).

Re: What am I doing wrong? Garmin 2820

What extension are the files you ripped? Straight from a cd they are .cda. Garmin won't read those. Has to be .mp3 or .wma

Re: What am I doing wrong? Garmin 2820

Ok. I uploaded the cd to iTunes. Looks like the files are .m4a (MPEG-4) type.

Then copied and put in the Garmin / MP3 folder and ejected the USB....

Still nothing.

Should I be converting the music files? How?

I have never used itunes. Not an apple fan.
I do know that Garmin only reads .mp3 and .wma.

I use Windows Media Player to rip cd's.
output set to .mp3 and 128 bit

I think I figured out who to import CDs with MP3 encoding. That's for the future. Anyway I can change the ones in iTunes library?

Thanks Dan.

I'll start uploading the stuff as MP3 into my music and then copy them to Garmin.

I would not use itunes. It will convert the files to a proprietary format that makes them difficult to use and share.

Just use Windows Media Player to copy the CD's into MP3 format and then copy those to the Garmin.

Re: What am I doing wrong? Garmin 2820

Thanks to Dan, jhsonderb and now you Ted, I figured it out and got it working. Rip to Windows media Player and then copy to the Garmin MP3.

Another issue: There is a buzz from the Garmin audio out. As soon as I plug in the 3.5 mm pin in, I can hear a buzz, it's in the background also when the music is playing.

I'll call Garmin and see what they say.

Raffy,

Tvguy answered partially - if you have audio files in iTunes - in any format - you can convert to MP3 and also adjust bit rates as well - this is normal part of program.

Well, did everything work? I'm curious because I have a 2820 as well. How many songs will the 2820 hold anyway?

Re: What am I doing wrong? Garmin 2820

Something I read stated the 2820 will hold 500 songs. I might have seen this at garmin.com or getfeetwet.com. Can't say for sure.

I have not played wit iTunes (re-format to MP3). But it works as mentioned. i ripped the music in windows in MP3 format and then copied it to the 2820.

The only issue is a constant buzzing noise. i am using my ipod headset which has dual band 3.5 mm pin. When I pull the pin almost out, the buzz stops and i can hear the music in both ears.

Maybe I need a non-stereo 3.5 mm headset?

Re: What am I doing wrong? Garmin 2820

Regarding burning your CD collection:
Unless you start with your files burned as FLAC or Apple Lossless I don't suggest converting burned files between formats as the quality really suffers.
If you use iTunes, you can select what type of file you want your iTunes to burn with as a default and I suggest .mp3 @ 192kbs. You can bump up to 256 if you have plenty of hard drive space and want a little better quality. To change the default settings go to Preferences and then Import Settings. Apple is trying to get everyone to use their proprietary format which holds you hostage to using their hardware/software in the future (or selling licenses to others who want to have the ability).
If you have a ton of hard drive space then I suggest to burn lossless. You will have good archival storage of your CDs AND you can convert at any time. I suggest dbpoweramp for this and burning to FLAC. On a side note dbpoweramp is probably the best ripping program out there if you use Windows (none for Mac yet).

Using the owner's manual and these tips, I was able to load mp3 files. Thanks for the info.

Re: What am I doing wrong? Garmin 2820

Hey, Raffy, I got that same annoying buzz in my 2820. I sent it back and plugged in the new one. Guess what? Same damn buzz. And I thought the audio out jack was supposed to be stereo. Mine ain't. I have my phone Bluetoothed to the 2820 and I don't know if that kills the stereo output.
