GPS databases

I'm a "map guy" but am tempted to get a GPS for the databases on restaurants, campsites, etc. Just how good are the databases when you get out in the boondocks?

Thanks,

Re: GPS databases

How much good data is in the GPS? It depends on your area. If it is the boonies, but well traveled, there will be a good bit of detail. If the boonies aren't well traveles, there is less info.

My issue is that where I live, there has been so much expansion so quickly that much of it is not in the GPS data yet.

I'm a map guy too. Great for the big picture and planning. I'm also a GPS guy which I have found to be an extremely valuable tool for planning and detailed information, e.g., hotel/camping/lodging with phone number info for reservations, gas stations, rest stops, estimated time of arrivals to specific locations, restaurants along the way or at destination, etc. A GPS can also be a distraction too if over used. Both are tools that can complement one another particularly if you do long distance touring in unfamiliar states. I use a Garmin 2820 which also serves as an XM radio tuner with the optional antenna.

I just checked the Garmin site and there is no mention of the lifetime map updates. Do you have more info for us? Thanks for the info

I'm a little concerned as to what Garmin considers "lifetime" - from the fine print:

So - "useful life" is when Garmin decides to discontinue the product? As it is, my 2730 is not on the list of compatible products ...

Re: GPS databases

Thanks for the link. My GPS is the Nav III equivalent to the 2820. BMW still is selling them and Garmin web is showing the 2820 as discontinue. I wonder how long they are going to support their unit . I wonder if it is worthit to buy the lifetime support.

I called and spoke to Garmin, they are not trying to pull a fast one, just coverering their butt. If you update just two times you will be ahead. Look online and you can get it for $92-95.00 (a gift card type)
Good luck.

Thanks for calling, that was nice and you are right, I see in the website 119 for gift card or buy, I did not see 92. It is a good deal and I am planning to keep it for a few years any way.
