Bug in Mapsource 6.15.3

After 2 days of scratching my head and hours on the phone with Garmin, we found a bug in Mapsource 6.15.3 that causes a message "This route has an unknown format".

This happens with the BMW navigator ( first one) that is installed on the K1200 LTE . You will see it if you create a route on your PC and upload it to your GPS then try to activate the route.

The cure is to revert to version 6.14.1 of mapsource. It can be found here:

www.gpsinformation.org/perry/msource

Scroll down and download the file.. Uninstall 6.15.3 before installing this one.

It won't have any effect on your City Navigator Maps.

Hope this helps,

Ron

So the bug is with the Navigator not the software?

Or are you saying it will do this with all Garmin GPS units?

Thanks for the link to the older version.

That is the second bug found so far as the first one won't let you do a round trip from home to somewhere and back to home with out crashing. Did Garmin take lessons from Bill Gates?

I'll try to explain the "garmin way"

You have a program called mapsource that allows you to make routes. The latest version is Mapsource 6.15.3 and available for free from Gamin's download page.

Next you have a mapping program. In this case mine is City Navigator 8 NA. These are the maps that you install on your computer and then into your GPS. Mapsource uses these to route.

The bug is in the Mapsoucre latest version 6.15.3.

The GPS unit is fine. I only have the original BMW navigator to try this on. I am not aware of it being a problem with any other Garmin GPS's.

John is that too a Navigator, or any branded Garmin GPS?

Ron thank you for your patience in explaining the "Garmin" way.

I do get it though. I am just trying to figure out if it is a bug on the BMW Navigator specific, or all Garmin GPS.

Re: Bug in Mapsource 6.15.3

I created a loop route with the new version of Mapsource and uploaded it to my 2610. The 2610 had no trouble loading and activating the route. It seems to have worked just fine.

Re: Bug in Mapsource 6.15.3

The issue does not affect the Garmin units just the routing software on your computer. I was always able to round trips - that is until 6.15.3.

Re: Bug in Mapsource 6.15.3

I am able to do a loop route with the new version using the routing tool instead of via points. If you try to recalculate it though, it crashes. The question here was if any routes created with the new version could be activated on other than Navigator units. In my case, the 2610 had no problem activating a route created on 6.15.3.

Thank you for explaining what I was trying to ask.

I just need to try it on my 2820.

Re: Bug in Mapsource 6.15.3

I'm hoping someone can clear things up for me. I was told that Mapsource is free, I went to the Garmin site and downloaded Mapsource. I tried to open it and no luck. It says Mapsource cannot find any installed Mapsource product maps. I was told that Mapsource would work with my C340 hooked up to my computer. Was I given the wrong information? Do I have to purchase a new map from Garmin to use Mapsource?

Any clarification would be appreciated. I really don't want to purchase any maps to use the Mapsource.

Re: Bug in Mapsource 6.15.3

As I understand it, if the City Navigator NT CD did not come with your C340 then Mapsource will not have any map data that it can work with. There is a worldmap you can download but it is almost useless as far as routing is concerned. The maps already on the C340 can't be transferred to your PC so that Mapsource can use them. About your only option would be to purchase a City Navigator NT CD or an upgrade City Navigator NT CD and then install it on your PC.

Re: Bug in Mapsource 6.15.3

There are more known bugs with 6.15.3 which include;
  • Custom waypoint symbols no longer work
  • Changes all of your via point symbols to a large obnoxious blue flag.
According to Garmin, they know about these problems, and will correct with the next version.

Cheers, Toolman

I wish I could think of clever things to say in my signature.
