New (to me) 2002 LTE - GPS question

I have perused the pages and pages about the GPS issues and learned some things but have not found an answer to my problem.

two days ago I picked up a new-to-me 2002 LTE. On my way home (brrr) I noticed curiously low detail on the GPS (just main hwys no local street detail). The PO had traded the bike in and left a large box with accessories for the next owner - me.
Included for the GPS was a printout from the web with an "unlock code" and a "coupon code" dated some time in 2002. A DVD with a Mapsource City navigator v8 update, cables, manuals, and a reading device for the Garmin 64mB card in the unit. The unit appears to be a StreetPilot III but it says "BMW Motorcycle navigator" on it. When you power the unit up it says "cannot access accessory card" or something like that.

So I thought - maybe the info on the GPS is not for this region and I need to update. Problem 1 - I'm a Mac guy and the DVD says "PC ... required..."
So I tried to update the software tonight on my laptop from work. That laptop is running a version of Mapsource from my other little hiking GPS. Put in the DVD, installed the map set, it asks for a unlock key. Type in the 2002 unlock key and it says thank you. Try to upload something to the unit - no luck. Still says "Map Detail Locked" on the bottom of the screen.
Whe I use the litte USB gadget and put in the card, it only lets me transfer way points, but maps and all other options are grayed out.

So I call Garmin. No luck either. After I give them the serial number they say - the unit is not registered under your name so we cannot provide service to you.

what the heck?

What do I do now? Any sugestions would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Kaswahn

Re: New (to me) 2002 LTE - GPS question

Hello and Happy Holidays...

I would hope the GPS is registered under the previous owners name? If so, Garmin will contact him to verify and they have the unit transfered to your name. If not, perhaps the PO will help you trace down the original owner but in either case yje unit, and Garmin will only be of help so long as the ownership records are straight.

Hope this helps...

Re: New (to me) 2002 LTE - GPS question

In 2004 I had the same problem with my BMW GPS on my 1999 LT. At first they too were not going to give me a new unlock code and told me I had to spend a couple of $100.

What I would do if I were you and ,this is what I did, tell them it is off a BMW motorcycle sold by BMW etc... When the lady found this out she stated she wanted to keep me and the relationship between BMW and Garmin happy. I got all the codes for free.

Kaswahn,
Did you UPDATE the maps from the Garmin Website? Thats where you enter the unlock codes again, on line, and get the most recent updates. Also you can set the amount of detail displayed on the unit in set up.

By all means go to Garmin and "register" your unit. I recently bought an '02 LTE that also has the BMW Navigator and you're right, it IS a Streetpilot III. I registered the unit online and it shows the unlock codes and all the maps. I think I had even gotten a message about the unit was already registered and if I purchased it from the previous owner. Garmin recently sent me for free the 2009 Mapsource DVD but no unlock code. It looks like on the website they want $75.00 for the unlock code?

This is part of Garmin's security package, only "registered" owners can get upgrades,
I had the same issue with the GPS on my bike,
a phone call from the original owner (to Garmin) solved the problem

$75.00 with credit card on-line and they send the unlock code. Easy.

Not exactly 100% correct,
the $75 and the unlock code is for the latest upgrade CD or software, they come out with a new one every year, new streets, motels, restaurants etc.

None of that will do you any good if you can't prove (to Garmin) that you're the rightfull owner and have registered your GPS.

Re: New (to me) 2002 LTE - GPS question

Thanks for the input. I went to the web site and registered it like blueknight suggested. No complaints, i.e. no message like "previously registered" so I felt really good. Retrieved the unlock keys through the unit with the applet supplied by Garmin - all fine. Unfortunately it still does not unlock my maps...

Guess it will be another phone call to Garmin and arguing about it. I mean it should be fairly common that these bikes get sold and the PO does not provide every bit of info and such. There has to be a way to do this through Garmin...

What a PITA. I'll keep you posted.
