Cant hear the NAV III GPS

Just got the NAVIII and Voice II systems installed on my 2009 LT today. I do not have headsets yet. I am trying like the dickens to hear the NAV III voice but cant. The volume is up and mute is off on the NAV III system. Should I be able to hear the navigation system prompts through the speakers on the bike? If so which 15 knobs do I have to turn?

Thank You

Re: Cant hear the NAV III GPS

You're not going to hear anything through the speakers,

headset only.

Re: Cant hear the NAV III GPS

An interesting thing happened on the way to the forum...I was at the insurance company paying the bill for my new bike and when I came out a fellow was checking it out. We got into conversation and to my surprise he has responsibility for development for the Garmin/BMW NAV line of products for motorcycles. I explained my situation of not being able to hear the NAV III throught the VOICE II system. He was rather surprised. He asked if I would bring the bike to the Garmin headquarters so his design engineers could see what the problem was. I guess there is a benefit to living in Kansas. Will let you know this turns out.

Re: Cant hear the NAV III GPS

They'll probably find out what "we" already know,

there is not any problem with the Garmin,
the Voice II system is designed to have the voice in the headset speakers "only"
and only when the Voice II is turned on,
thats how BMW wanted it and once you get the headset you'll probably like it that way.

think about this a moment, I usually listen to the music with both the LT's speakers
and the headset on (you can even adjust the "relative" volume)

when the GPS "tells" me where to turn it "cuts off" the headset music
but the speakers keep playing so the music isn't "completely" interupted
and I still get my directions.

I have an 06 1200RT with the stock GPS/BMW NavIII and the J&M/BMW Voice/Comm system (Has the CB, intercomm, Aux). I've never used the Voice/COmm system as I have no helmet speakers. I'd love to hear the GPS so I guess I will have to install some helmet speakers.

Anyway, you lost me talking about your LT's speaker and the headset. Are you saying you can play the radio (say the FM) through the bike's speakers and also turn on the Voice/Comm system and hear only the GPS through the headset? What selection do you make on the Voice/Comm system? Aux? Or does it make any difference? When the GPS speaks does it reduce the FM radio volume on the bike's speakers?

Thanks

My GPS came with a speaker attachment that plugs into a power outlet (cig liter)
so that when I use it in my truck I can hear the GPS.
So even if you don't want helmet speakers there's a way you can hear if you want to go that route.

Now regarding the comm II, I can play the radio/CD/XM/Ipod through the speakers
or the helmet speakers or both at the same time,

I can adjust the relative volume of the bike speakers to the helmet speakers,
when my speed increases so does the volume for both sets of speakers,
I've turned my wife's helmet speakers off to music (intercom still works)

anytime (the comm system is turned on and in any setting)
when the GPS "speaks" it mutes the music in the helmet speakers
but the bike speakers are not affected
(they keep the same volume)

anytime the intercom is used it also mutes the helmet speakers
but the GPS overrides the intercom also

does that "splain it"

Roger that. I have one of those too, and it's possible to get some sound via the cig plug speaker, but with a full face helmet and any speed at all I can't hear anything much.

Odd. I tried using my Roady XM radio with the male patch cord located in the CD storage area, but NO sound comes through the dash speakers. I was told the input from whatever is connected using that plug ONLY goes to the Voice/Comm system (on the left handlebar). I've not tried that yet because I thought the sound from the Voice/Comm ONLY goes to the headset?

Nah, but I am slow! I'm gonna connect my old headset speakers to the Voice/Comm system and try the things you've said above and see if I can figure it all out! I have a J&M headset, not installed in my helmet that I can use to test things. When I bought the mc used it included the J&M lower cord that plugs into the lower left dash, so I'll give it a try this weekend maybe.

Thanks, Silver Buffalo.

Hello again Hans.

The experimentation continues. I took my helmet-less helmet speakers down to the RT and plugged in the cord. Turned on the Voice/Comm system and the GPS and the FM radio. My settings and results are below:

1. Anytime the GPS is turned on I can hear the GPS audio through one side of the helmet speakers. I believe this is normal.

2. In the scenario 1 above, the Voice/COmm system does not have to be turned on; the GPS audio comes through in ANY mode (CB, Intercomm, Weather, whatever is the other one <shows a musical note>)

3. I selected "Speaker OFF" for the FM radio, which turned off the sound from the bike's dash speakers, but did NOT route the radio sound to the helmet speakers. I even tried changing the "Fade" form 1 to 10 in the hopes the FM radio sound would start going out the helmet speakers, but it never did.

Now granted yours is 2002 GT model and mine is a 2006 RT, but surely the controls would work about the same? Any ideas?

I don't see any controls on the Voice/Comm system that might also control where the radio's audio is going, but that's a possibility I suppose? I don't have a manual for that system.

Right now the only way I can hear the radio is to turn the speakers ON. So if I want to listen to the radio I have to turn the dash speakers ON. Since I have to use the helmet speakers anyway to hear the GPS audio I'd sure like to hear the music from the speakers too! This is frustrating!

Re: Cant hear the NAV III GPS

Oh wow, Hans, our two systems are quite different. I'd have not thought there was that much difference in the two models since we both have OEM radios.

I have the OEM Radio, OEM GPS/NAVIII and the OEM CB unit (which is what I've been calling the Voice/Comm). The controls on the radio are a little different between our radios. But my CB/Voice/Comm system is a J&M that's made for the RT. I figured we had the same hardware, but in fact that doesn't appear correct, at least in the controls provided. For instance, I get to the Loud Speaker on or off by repeated pressing the Tone button on my lower right fairing; a button which your system doesn't have as far as I can tell. I didn't see how to turn your speakers off.

I said eariler:

You replied
"No sound of any kind in my headset unless comm is on "

I'm now not sure what you mean by "comm is on". I THOUGHT that was the CB unit made by J&M on my RT, but I don't get get any radio through my headset except for CB, Wx radio, the GPS, and my XM (which is plugged into the J&M system using the supplied patch cord. I get NO radio sound at all. Something must be wrong somewhere.

I wish someone with an RT and the stock radio and CB system would chime in here; there ought to be SOMEONE out there!?

Thanks. I am trying over at the BMWSportTouring forum also. Actually there is a discussion going on at BMWLT in the "RT" section that might be helpful for me. I forgot to thank you earlier for taking the time to post the pages from the radio manual - Thanks! I know that took some time and effort and it's appreciated!

I don't yet belong to the BMWMOA yet.
