GXM 30 antenna gone bad.

Happened on a trip of course. On Saturday would not get a signal in the AM. I stopped, disconnect and blew on the connectors. Antenna then worked.

Sunday, allday the XM would not work. Got the error message, "no antenna".

Today went to a Marina store and the lady was super. Found an antenna and swap it out after paying, $300. I was happy. The lady told me Garmin charges $140 just to look, so a savings there.

hmm.. I wonder if you could put some "electric grease" on the connector? Might keep things from "zapping" on ya.

No, It's the cord.. The cord will eventually give out unless you really baby it.
Then there's the usb connector on the unit itself.
I just had to take my unit apart and re-solder the usb connector back to it's little circuit board... That was fun.

On my second antenna. First replaced under warranty, I'm much more carefull with the new one. You will be too...

Good Luck,

John

Re: GXM 30 antenna gone bad.

This concerns me. I bought a GXM30 on ebay that I thought was new. Turns out, it was refurbished. Kept it, and it usually works, but sometimes I will see a "no antenna" message. I remove the zumo, press on the antenna connector where it plugs into the base, and it works. Maybe some day it won't.

So where does it fail? If some soldering is needed, my wife is good at that sort of stuff. Is it in the antenna cord?

Re: GXM 30 antenna gone bad.

No soldering on the cable or connector of the GXM-30

What recently broke on mine was the USB connector itself on the 2730.

You might check that and see if it will wiggle when you push it back and forth with a toothpic,.. it should be pretty solid...

Re: GXM 30 antenna gone bad.

Took the old antenna apart. There is a connector, which they would just make a replacement harnest for the antenna.

In one of the picture you will see where the break was, near my thumb the shiny part. Sorry for the bad picture.

Considering my experience with Garmin's customer support, I have to believe that if you call them and raise a small stink (especially to the right person), they'll take care of it.

Thanks for the pics John. That really helps explain the problem, and the fix.
