What GPS?

I have a BMW Navigation (aka Garmin Street Pilot 3) on my 2002 LT. I would like to update the unit but still use the mount and power, antenna and comm connections that are on the bike. What if any are my options?

Re: What GPS?

I believe most of the Garmin units will use the same wired connections. You will need a different mount, as the new units are all different sizes and shapes.

Re: What GPS?

I don't think mount and power for any of the new models will work with the the SP III items except maybe the 276C, 376C, 378 and 478, but NONE of the other models will.

I'm not sure what model you have, but I believe the Nav II and Nav III from BWM share the same cradle. This is worth noting because the Nav III which is almost identical to a Garmin 2820 apparently cannot be replaced with one -- I've read elsewhere that the 2820 will not work in the BMW cradle. I'm guessing BMW wanted to re-use the cradles when they switched from the Nav II to the Nav III so they had Garmin tweak the 2820 slightly as part of BMW branding (in addition to adding the dealer database and removing music playback.)

Sorry bud ... no can do. ANY update is going to require a new cradle, new cables, or both. Your Nav I (aka SPIII) drastically changed when Garmin introduced the Nav II (aka SP 2610). Like Steve said, you could go with a 276C, 376C, 378 or 478 which would only require a mount change.

What Joe said. At one time with a couple of modifications yes, but not now.

Re: What GPS?

Oh contraire - the SP3 has a 4 pin back connector and the 276C, 376C, 378 and 478 series use a 8 pin connector. I do not believe they are interchangeable as there are special tabs built in the 76 and 78 series.

You have no options you need to move on or stay with Ole Betty!!
The SP3 is about 3 generations old and loosing ground quick . . .

Re: What GPS?

Yeah, what the last guy said - the pins on the 376c are absolutely different than the original Street Pilot circa 2002.

Having said that, though, I think the 376c is one of the best values to be had these days. While true that it is a generation behind, TVNAV.com has reconditioned 376c units in stock for $595. This is a great deal as it includes the GXM30 smart antenna - you'd pay at least $200 for that elsewhere. You can use the 376c and be super happy with it for a few years (I've had mine for 3 years, give or take, and it's running just fine) and still use the GXM30 with a future Garmin GPS.

Re: What GPS?

The 276C and the 376C are different.

Re: What GPS?

My mistake the plugs on the 276 and 376 are the same. (I was thinking of the old GPS-5)
