Replacement BMW Nav II from Garmin Map Detail not Unlocking...

My 3.5 year old Nav II's screen bubbled and peeled off so I shipped it to Garmin, paid my flat $200 and received a replacement refurbished unit.

I put the 2GB data card with all the detailed US maps that I loaded and used with my old unit into the new one. Garmin provided me with the unlock code which I entered in successfully but I am not getting any detailed maps. Also, every time I turn on the bike, it takes a good 5-6 minutes for this new unit to acquire sattelites. Then its just the basic, no detail maps.

Whats the deal?

You will need to get a new unlock code from them. They should have sent that number to you. When you change units the serial number of your new unit does not match the number on your card. Call them and they will fix it for you quick.

Sorry. My bad. I read the first paragraph then went off. When you entered the unlock code you unlocked the maps on your computer in mapsource right? If so, I think you will need to reload the maps on your card from Mapsource so that new code will go with the maps to your new unit.

No. Garmin provided me with an unlock code for the Nav II unit they shipped me. So I entered the code into the new Nav II. All my maps were unlocked, loaded onto my 2GB card and working perfectly in the old Nav II.

Sorry. I'm confused. You unlocked the maps from the Navigator II GPS unit? I didn't know you could do that. I thought they had to be unlocked from MapSource on your computer then downloaded to the card that goes into the Navigator II.

Are you using the latest Mapsource? I had the same issue with a replacement 2610. I would call them as suggested to get it worked out...

Good Luck
I was thinking that might be my issue. The Mapsource that I have downloaded onto the 2GB card was with the original software that I got when I bought the unit in 2005. The replacement Nav II unit has a significantly later serial number and probably has been updated with the latest software at Garmin when they refurbished it.

I am on hold with them right now("expected wait time is 30 minutes") ...

If that turns out to be the issue, I will have to download the latest software on my computer then reload it onto my 2GB card, right? Is there any problem loading the new data over the old data on the card?

As you can see, I am pretty uninformed here

Just reformat the card before you download. What did you find out from Garmin?

Re: Replacement BMW Nav II from Garmin Map Detail not Unlocking...

Garmin asked for the new serial number and issued me a new unlock code to put into the replacement unit.

I will try to see if the new code clears up the problem. If not, they suggested I update the MapSource software and then reload the data onto the 2GB card. Might just be best to do that anyway to have the latest updates.

I remember it taking a couple of hours to download the entire US and Canada to my 2GB card.

If you use a card reader it will go quite a bit quicker. Good luck.

Well, reloaded the updated MapSource data and went through the 3 hour download onto the 2GB card.

Detailed maps are loaded. Thanks for the input gents...

Re: Replacement BMW Nav II from Garmin Map Detail not Unlocking...

Mike,

I just picked up an 05 LT with the Nav II and am trying to get the GPS updated. Can you verify that the unit will take a 2GB flash card? I've been told that the max size is 512MB.

Once that's resolved, I'll purchase a City Navigator 2009 disk and update the maps.

Thanks.
