GPS for K1200LT

I am looking at purchasing a BMW K1200LT,but it has no GPS system on the bike. Would you recommend the BMW bought version or a store bought Garmin and have it put on myself. I was told the Garmin Zumo 550 was a god model for the bike. Any help or comments here to help me. Also is there a mounting bracket on the bike for this or can it be bought separately...Tks Pat

Thumbs up Re: GPS for K1200LT

Do a search for GPS on this site and you will get plenty of information. There are a bunch of different mounts out there as well as several different types of Garmin GPS's that will work on the LT.

Try this web site for new and factory refurbed units. I've bought several refurbed until from them and never had a problem.

Re: GPS for K1200LT

I just bought an 05 LT and have the Navigator II on my GS and wanted to switch back and forth. So I bought the Mount, the wiring harness, and then had to buy an additional wiring harness...by the time I took off the fairing and all the stuff off, mounted the new mount, wires, etc I had over $400 in just the cables and mount plus a week of trying to figure out where the extra two screws I had left over went in the fairing...Anyway my .02 cents worth would to be to buy the Zumo , .....It all works now but I still have an old technology GPS and it is nothing compared to the Nuvi I bought for my truck...

Good Luck

Re: GPS for K1200LT

I have the Garmin 376C mounted on a BMR shelf, and couldn’t be happier. I have that coupled with the XM radio/weather antenna. (Knowing the size and location of storm cells is irreplaceable when miles from home) I would also recommend Touratech’s locking mounts.

Re: GPS for K1200LT

Here's my Zumo 550 on a BMR shelf. I've documented my installation in high detail in another thread. Of course, you can search for posts by mrbiker if you're interested in finding it.

I can't tell you how much I love this setup. It's perfect (for me). That's the XM traffic/music antenna on the left, and a Passport 9500 on the right. Have a look:

By a fluke I was looking on the Canadian shopping channel last Thursday, May 29 and was totally shocked to see the Garmin Zumo 550 on sale for $259.95.

Look closely, there are some great prices out there.

Cheers,

Re: GPS for K1200LT

Everyone seems to like the Zumo over the Nav III, or am I mistaken? Just bought an 09 and to install the Zumo is alot of work I don't want to do. It seems that the wire is already compatible to the Nav III, so why not just use whats compatible with the bike? Is there that big of a difference in the two systems?
