Any [GOOD] Alternative(s) to Garmin Mapsource for Routing?

Those of you that have used Google Maps may/or may not know that you can drag/drop your route with dynamic re-calculation. Very powerful...want to avoid Dallas, just drag the route around it.

And while not meant to be overly critical, I find Mapsource neanderthal and painful in designing a route. I am aware there are some other mapping programs (don't know their names) that can output a GDB file? What can you recommend and why?

Thanks

Don Norwood lead a discussion on this at the STC in April.

A good many people use MS Streets and Trips and then simply convert the files using GPS Babel.

I've been using streets and trips for a few years now but only recently discovered using GPS Babel to convert the file for my Lowrance.

It will also let you covert to the Garmin format as well.

You can do essentially the same thing with Mapsource. You can dynamically reroute or "rubberband" your route to take in a place you want to go or avoid a place you don't want to go by left clicking on the calculated route once until it turns yellow. Then left click once more and release and you can "rubberband" the route to anywhere you like, clicking one last time to the location or POI you want to take in. Try it!

John,

Thanks for asking the question! A couple of us were discussing this at coffee this morning....now we know.

Well...I'd really like to be able to do this..........
I left click on the name of completed route on the left of screen.
Highlighted route turns yellow.
I left click on route name again, nothing seems to happen.
I then left ckick on road/town I'd like to include and instead of rerouting, it starts another route. What did I miss ?

DOH ! Got it.
I was clicking the name of the route (which also highlighted it yellow)
BY clicking the actual highlighted route it works great
Thanx

Re: Any [GOOD] Alternative(s) to Garmin Mapsource for Routing?

Initially, I did not care for the Mapsource program. However, the more I use it the more I like it.

Give it some time and try to keep it using it. I now use it exclusively.
