which model GPS for K1200LT?

I've had my new "2008" LT for 1 week now and man do I love it. The WOW factor that people show towards the bike is incredible. The reason that I'm posting is that I'm looking to purchase a GPS for the bike and I'd like to know what others think as far as which unit to buy. It seems that most people choose either the Zumo 550 or the Garmin 2820. I have nolan ncom 102 helmets and I've ordered the J&M headsets for that model helmet. I would like to be able to connect the GPS into the system on the bike so that I can receive audio from gps if possible.

Thanks,

Richard

I got the Zumo 550 and really like it. I've never used the 2820 so I can't compare. So far the Zumo is doing everything I'd hoped when I bought it. I wanted to use a complete Bluetooth set up on the bike and the Zumo fits into that nicely. Great sound on the MP3s and good integration with my cell phone. Easy to use and the glove friendly touch screen and buttons actually are glove friendly.

Good luck. From what I've read you'll probably enjoy either one.

BTW, I'm jealous of the brand new LT. bought my '02 in Sept and I'm already trying to figure out how to argue for buying a brand new one.

The Zummo and the 2820 have pretty much the same features except if you have the XM weather and traffic added the 2820 has a very cool feature that lets you see the weather on the map the Zummo only tells you about it. Last trip I road with a guy who had a new Zummo and we compared things the whole trip, both great GPS's but I like my 2820 with the weather on the map feature better (used that alot).

If you ride in the big city's the 550 may be the better bet. The 550 has the surf satellite tracking system. Prior experience with my 2610 loses satellite in NYC, Ctown and SF. Plus reboot time with the 550 takes seconds.
The 550 has a limited number of waypoint storage , Could be a drawback for long trips.

Personally, I went with the 2720 since I don't use BT and it was half the price of the Zumo. Plus, at the time, it used the stock mount and the Zumo didn't. Now the Zumo has a stock mount so that reason is moot.

Re: which model GPS for K1200LT?

Just purchased an 08 LT Sunday. I have (or my daughter has it at the moment) a 2820 (Ithink). Will this mount to the BMW mount on the tank, and will it interfac to the sound system via the pre-wire cable? Or do I need to suck up the $$$$ for the BMW version to get the full integration?

Thanks in Advance.

It'll interface just fine with the INTERPHONE sound system. The turn alerts don't come through the speakers, only through the helmet intercom.

Re: which model GPS for K1200LT?

My 08 LT came with the 2820 (Nav III) mounted and hardwired into the comm system. Does anyone know if that cancels any opportunity to add the traffic and weather? I assume those features come in via the power outlet extension cord having a receiving antenna in it.

The Nav III is not an exact copy of the 2820. It does not support XM anything. So, no XM radio. No weather.

I also went with the 2720 and purchased a BT transmitter from a forum member. I believe retail was $40. I then picked up two Cardo TeamRider BT headsets (~$200). The headsets are paired, primary/secondary, where the primary gets GPS via BT and secondary (interface with pillion).
My Shoei Multitec helmets can hold 2 sets of headphones, so one is the TeamRider and another is a Radio Shack titanium (~$20) with a slide volume control that goes to the MP3.
That seems to be all I need. I find I don't really need to hear the Lady-in-the-GPS directions all that often.
