2720 not recognized...

Recent Ebay purchase which may be the problem. Everything was included in the box and unit is working. Wanted to download current drivers after successfuly using the unlock code, however, the unit is not being recognized when plugged into the USB port.

Working with Garmin has been good with the last guy (talked to three)believing the cause is the cable although I used my cell phone cable on another computer with no luck. Failing that, Garmin wants $200 to repair the unit .

Any experience with this type of problem out there?

Re: 2720 not recognized...

Are you absolutely sure you downloaded the correct USB driver for that unit?

95% of the time, it's the cable. Are you saying that the cable did work with your cell phone?

Re: 2720 not recognized...

Don't know if you've tried this yet, the other possibility is the DRIVER. If you plugged it in and let windows pick the driver invarably it picks the wrong one. Check your c: drive for Garmin usb_drivers, There is an install_usb.txt file the contents of which are...

Installation of Garmin USB Device Drivers

1. Connect the USB connector on the end of your device to the
USB port on your computer. Any free USB port on your computer
will work. The computer does not need to be turned off when connecting
or disconnecting your device.

2. The computer will recognize your device as a USB device and open the
Add New Hardware Wizard and search for the driver.
Click on "Next". If, for some reason, the Wizard does not run
automatically, click the Start button and select "Settings" and then
"Control Panel". Double click on the "Add New Hardware" icon.

3. The next screen will ask you if you want to search for the best
driver for your device or if you want to display a list to choose
from. Select "Search for the best driver for your device" and
click on "Next".

4. The next screen will display a list of locations to search for the
new driver. Select "Specify Location" from the list and click
on "Next". Make certain all other boxes remain unchecked.

5. The next screen will prompt you to enter the location of the driver.
Enter the location (either the CD or the folder where the driver was
saved) and Click "OK".

6. The Wizard will search for the driver and then display a window to
tell you it is ready to install. Click on "Next". You may see a
"Copying Files..." screen which tells you the file cannot be found.
Choose the folder that contains the driver files and try copying again.
Click "OK" to continue.

7. When installation is complete a window will display that shows the
device name and states that driver installation is finished.
Click on "Finish".

Re: 2720 not recognized...

I had the same problem with my 2720. turned out to be a hardware problem with the unit. Mine was under warranty so no cost to me. Hopefully yours is as well.

Re: 2720 not recognized...

I sometimes get that when I plug devices into my front case usb ports I think it is a voltage problem with the port, when this happens i get device unrecognised, I then plug directly into the motherboard it then works fine

Re: 2720 not recognized...

Thanx to all that replied.

Yes, I am sure the right drivers are choosen to download. Worked extensively with Garmin support and they seem stumped as well other than the last support tech suspected it is a cable problem but I am not sure why my cell phone USB cable would not work either.

I did try to download from my office computer as well with no luck on either the front or rear USB connection points. Tried the Garmin cable on the cell phone and it recognized it but not the GPS.

Since this unit is not under warranty, Garmin wants $200 to repair (one other tech said $150) if the new cable does not work. Problem is, the seller has a 7 day return policy and the new cable should be here in 10 days.

Returning the unit is an option but I will be out shipping in both directions to the tune of some $40 each way, not to mention the customs fees.

Currently thinking of filling a dispute with PayPal but I am unfamiliar with how all that works as this is my first buy.

The unit works fine otherwise, as far as can determine but I figure it has to communicate with future downloads to be effective.

Thnx again for your replies...

Great advice and detail... The Wizard does not think the drivers for this unit that I downloaded have driver information???

All points to the fact that there is a hardware issue...

Re: 2720 not recognized...

My 2720 had to be sent in for a new USB port once as well. It's not that uncommon unfortunately.

Have you contacted the seller and tried to resolve the issue with them before you file a dispute?

He did but the seller failed to answer the last few e-mails.

Furthermore, Mauro shouldn't have to pay for shipping to and from the seller for an exchange unit, if that ends up being the scenario. And if it is being refunded, it should be for the full amount, not the full amount less shipping. Whose fault is it that its not working...the sellers...he should have tested it!

He bought a unit that was advertized as "New" in the header and further down it says "Like New"...so which is it?

Sounds like a fly-by-night seller and one of the reasons I stay clear of eBay and Pay Pal.

Re: 2720 not recognized...

It could be the USB version, too. If the GPS is USB2.0 and you're plugging it into a USB1.0 port, it may not work. The ports are downward compatible. Not all devices are.

We'll check that tonight, but since it was tried on the home and work computer, I somehow doubt it. Windows XP with Service Pack 2 is the OS I believe.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the type of USB port has NOTHING to do with this issue. The newer Garmin units support USB 2.0 and they obviously work faster when plugged into a 2.0 port, but they will still work just fine with a USB 1.x port. Typically, the only devices that insist on a powered port or 2.0 port are devices that have a harddrive in them. Besides, XP will give you a warning, but will still let the device operate.

Having said all of that ... I am assuming that the user has Windows XP (Home or Pro). Windows 98 and ME really suck when it comes to USB support.

I mentioned that because my HP PSC1210 DOES NOT work on USB 1.0. I figured the GPS was 2.0, but ya just never know.

Re: 2720 not recognized...

Thanx to all that replied.

After much consideration and testing, the only rescourse was to send the unit back to the seller to honour his 7 day return policy. I believe he either did not test the unit before putting it up for sale or purposely tried to sell a defective unit that he described as "NEW".

Another hard lesson learned but I do not understand why PayPal cannot force the seller to cover the shipping costs ubder these circumstances.

Regards...
