BMW GPS Bracket fits what

Soon to get delivery of my LT which comes with the GPS Bracket that has buttons on the left side and connections. I understand that this unit accepts the 2810 but the left buttons will not work. Anyone know what the deal is here? Is there a specific GPS that fits the unit to operate these buttons? I do not know what those buttons do so I am not sure what I would be missing and which GPS would be best to get.

Thanks for your input...

Mauro

Re: BMW GPS Bracket fits what

probably a bmw navigator II and no I believe the buttons wont work with any other type of gps, they are a rebadged garmin unit, and look like 26XX 27XX and 28XX series onwards there is a sub group in the forums for GPS have a look in there also

Re: BMW GPS Bracket fits what

Actually, The Navigator II OR Nav III will work. The Nav II is equivalent to a Garmin 2610 (basically). And the Nav III is more like a 2820, but without XM.

It sucks that the Garmin units render those extra buttons useless . . . but I'm still not too sure that the extra cost of the BMW-badged units are worth it. Once you do a little shopping, you can make up your own mind. Personally, I highly recommend you getting a Garmin 2820 and be done with it.

As a newby in this gadgetry, what is the difference between a 28xx, 27xx, 0r 26xx. These models seem to be outdated/discontinued which also means they can be had for a lower price in the aftermarket but are upgrades to keep them current still available?

I also have a BMW communication on the bike and wonder what/how any of these models work in conjunction with it.

All of these Garmin units are still being supported by Garmin, meaning that map updates are still available. The 2610 is obviously the oldest of the lot. It's a good unit w/ a fast processor ... but it lacks the newer GUI (Graphical User Interface) and any 3D capabilities. It also does not support TTS (text to speech). Once you have these features, it's tough going back.

The 2720 and 2730 are no longer manufactured, but have the new GUI and support TTS. The 2730 has the added feature of supporting XM Traffic, Weather, and Radio ... along with a built-in mp3 player.

The 2820 is still being manufactured, and also comes with the added support of Bluetooth technology. I just bought a used 2820 a few weeks ago and I am LOVING IT!!! I also bought the optional GXM30 (XM antenna), so now my 2820 serves as my GPS, cellphone interface, weather forecaster, traffic adviser, XM radio, and a backup mp3 player (with audio books). Not too shabby out of one little weatherproof box, eh?

Hope this helps. Keep the questions coming.

I'm not much help there as I have an aftermarket (IntaRide) intercom system. Some searching through the 'Intercom' subforum should get you some helpful info.

Confused by your comment- that the "bracket comes with buttons"... The mounting bracket is all that is on my bike(not yet delivered here either!!). The mount has 4 brass screws and the cable connection plug for attaching the "BMW GPS". Thats all.
I was told that the Garmin 2820 is the same unit(basically) except that it doesnt come with the buttons.
I just bought a new Garmin 2820 hoping that it would directly attach to the mount on the bike.... BUT, no, I still need to buy a conversion piece! I dint want to have all that extra plastic cluttering up the bike- but unless you shell out 1300.00 bucks for the "BMW GPS" there is nothing that will directly match-up.
Someone please tell me if I am wrong here. Since I don't have the bike in my possession YET- its more difficult to put it all together in my head.

Thanks guys!

Relax my friend, you're fine. Your Garmin 2820 will work just fine, but the left 4 buttons you see in the pic below will not be functional. NO BIG DEAL. Those functions will still work on the screen of the 2820.

Re: BMW GPS Bracket fits what

OK, relaxed here- but just to clarify, there won't be any buttons (as pictured) since the buttons only come with the "BMW GPS".
Sorry to belabor this point.
And yes the 2820 will work fine I am sure---- once I buy the adapter to MAKE it fit the BMW mount.

Just trying to get it all straight and confirm my understanding.

thanks again

Re: BMW GPS Bracket fits what

OK...let me put it this way. What you're seeing in that pic is the OEM BMW "mount" and "cradle". I think what you're saying is that you are NOT getting that cradle. If that's the case, you will need some type of cradle to attach to your mount. I use Garmin's 'motorcycle mounting kit'. It worked well on my LT, and now on my GT. It's about $32, and it comes with the power cable that you may need to power your 2820. (Are we getting closer? )

HTH
Keep the questions coming.

Re: BMW GPS Bracket fits what

LOL ok ok! I think I'm getting it! What your saying is that my new BMW comes with both the mount AND cradle? Maybe the bike I am getting has the cradle as part of the standard option package. If it does, I guess my dealer didn't choose to install that part of it for the showroom floor.

So, only two things I need to clarify:

1) does the cradle really come with the mount--- or
2) only with the "BMW badged GPS" unit when purchased.

So if the cradle comes with the bike- I could choose to use that cradle (with my 2820) and have "useless buttons".
OR....
Purchase the aftermarket cradle as you have done (without the useless buttons)

In either scenario will the stock electrical connectors be a fit/match?

whew! thanks again for your patience!

I will sure be happy to buy you a beer (or two!?) if we ever meet! -then again maybe you'll turn and run! hah

YES and NO. If you are not buying the BMW NAV III, the prewiring that will be routed up through the stingray to the mounting bracket will have an extra pigtail connection designed to connect to the BMW cradle with the additional buttons. This proprietary BMW cradle comes in the box with the NAV III. The other connection for power to the unit will work fine. Hey Joe, does he get audio via that connection to a non-BMW unit?

Re: BMW GPS Bracket fits what

I run a 2730 garmin on an 06 lt ,the gxm 30 antenna comes with the 2730 package but the BMW cradle can not be used on a 27xx or 28xx xm radio, you need to plug the cord for the xm to the left side of the garmin unit, the left side buttons on BMW cradle are in the way.

Re: BMW GPS Bracket fits what

Sorry to have confussed the issue. I believe my 06 originaly came with a NAVI II or III that the original owner must have kept/sold seperately so it left the OEM craddle with the bike.

As an update, I just made my first ebay purchase and got a 2720 for under $200 so I guess I will have no void cradle and lots to learn about the powers of this unit.

Best regards...

Re: BMW GPS Bracket fits what

Can I get clarification on the unlock code. The Ebay unit I just won indicated there is no unlock code with this 2720. I emailed the seller to get an explanation of how the unit can operate (it was described as being fully operational) but did not respond to me until after the auction ended. He now says that it is required to download maps. Is it a big deal to get this code? Should I back out of the deal since it sounds like it will now cosy me more to get it updated (what are the extra costs?).

This is getting complicated again...

Drop the BMW option altogether. The BMW Navigator units they market (Garmin 26xx) are way overpriced and at lease 3 generations behind in capability. Get an aftermarket Garmin 28xx or a Zumo instead.

Re: BMW GPS Bracket fits what

I just bought a 2002 LTE with a factory installed GPS (It still has V4 maps). If I decide to buy a 2820 will it fit into the factory mount and will all the wires interface with the bikes current setup?

The GPS that the bikes came with in 2002 are labor intensive and more than I want to mess with. Hope the 2820 will plug and play with the 2002 models system?

If the BMW unit is the Garmin 2610, the 2820 should fit in the cradle but the buttons on the BMW cradle will not work. No matter though, the touch screen and 2820 buttons will do you just fine. You will be for som re-wiring, however, since the connections on the 2610 and 2820 are different. You also need to check whether or not the 2820 will interface with your comm system, assuming you have one.

Oooh - that's really old. You are in for a total rewire for the new unit.
