Grab a cuppa joe & a snack, then check out this site. You;ll find just about all the information you need. There's a link to a chat forum similar to the appearance of this one where opinions abound as well.

Talking gps

I'm needing some help on purchasing a gps for the LT and I really don't have a clue on pricing, models, brands and so forth. Could anybody help me out?
Thanks

I have toiled over this for at least two years!

I have gone with the Garmin 2720 NOH or refurbed. Payed $ 315.00 for it on eBay shipped (thanks to messy13 for finding it), had the v8 software and will get the free 2008 version upgrade from Garmin.

Have the Sirius Replay unit and sounds great.

All of this was installed yesterday at BMW of Atlanta (great job) on a BMR Co-Pilot shelf and the proper mounts and cabling, whew!!!

Now I know that my bike has been 5-6 miles slower than what was showing on the speedo!

+1 Garmin Zumo 550

Has the capability to add XM radio/Weather. It designed for us bikers and is waterproof. Easy to read and operate with gloves on.

Also, there is now a BMW Zumo which is BMW's latest version of a bike navigator. (BMW selected the Zumo and had Garmin modify it for their application) Can't add XM to it, but it does have 'BMW' on the unit.

Lots of good info here.

I heard through the grapevine that the XM sound out of the Zumo is mono and not stereo (at least when hooked up to an Autocom unit).
Can anyone with that setup confirm or deny?

I don't know about Zumo, but I run my Roady XT thru Autocom and get full stereo........................
As for GPS, I use the 2720 (without XM) and couldn't be happier...........

I recently went through this and ended up with a Garmin 2820 with the XM hockey puck antenna/receiver. All in all it works great and is a pretty slick rig, but a bargain, it is not. With the 2820 and XM antenna listing for $1000 and $270 respectively there are many lower cost options that will get you the same or very similar results.

Both items are heavily discounted and I purchased them new in the box for $699 and $190 but am now wondering if a year or two old "new" 2720 (there seem to be plenty out there) and a separate XM unit for $50-75 wouldn't have made more sense. I do like the fact that there is less clutter without a separate XM unit and the XM display on the 2820 is really first rate, but...

When I bought the 2820, I didn't realize you needed the very expensive receiver to get XM so i was pretty far into the deal and there was no turning back.

GetFeetWet.com offers "debundled" GPS units, minus the XM puck, for a good rate. I just picked this one up - seemed like a great deal for a "current" technology unit (and I already had the XM Roady installed). I also see they offer refurbished 2610 units for ~$200 - also a great deal IMHO.
