New Zumo--Lack of map details

I recently purchased the new BMW Zumo for my 2007 K1200GT. I previously had the BMW Navigator II Plus on another bike that I traded in. I like the ease of operation of the new Zumo; however, I notice that the map detail is nominal compared to the Nav II plus.

The unit has an internal adjustment to increase the level of detail. I have done that. My previous unit has Nav 8.0 installed and it displayed the names of lakes, cities and other detail as you went along. I'd like to get this same level of detail in my new Zumo. I emailed Garmin and they replied:

"Unfortunately there is no way to increase the detail other than the
field that you have already used. There is not additional software
available for this unit to add this feature. Sorry for the
inconvenience."

I know that the unit comes pre-loaded from the factory with city navigator. If I reload the unit, does anyone think it would make a difference?

I miss the fine detail of the Nav II Plus.

Me too. I've ordered the update to City Nav 2008 maps, hoping that might include a bit more information, but I'm not holding my breath. Tough to deal with the lack of city/town names at zoomed-out scales.

I have a friend who bought a Zumo and was not very happy with it for several reasons. Then he downloaded the latest firmware release for it, and he said it was like a different unit-added features, etc.

Zumo Stuff

Unfortunately, the level of detail displayed on the screen is not what it used to be. I agree that seeing the little cities as we ride along is nice and miss that from my older Garmins. This is the way the Zumo works. You can touch the screen to switch to Map Display and that helps sometimes as does zooming in, but nothing great.

The features your friend mentioned were in a major Firmware update released in the Springtime. (Current versioin is 3.3 although the BMW version may have a different release) Stuff like compass, elevation, time of day, were added to several new screens. But no improvement in displaying the stuff along the route.
The problem is not whether you are using City Nav 2008 or V8, the problem is in what the Zumo SW chooses to display, and we can't affect that like we could on some of Garmin's older units.

For those who want to research the Zumo in more detail, try this site.
