street pilot III question

I recently bought an 02 LT which came with a Street Pilot. The unit has a nine pin connector but my laptop doesn't. Also when I connect the data card into my
laptop through the USB port it doesn't recognize this port only Com ports are recognized.

Any idea how I can get my GPS plugged onto the laptop and load some maps?

Thanks in advance

If you are using the USB programmer from Garmin to load the cards, you need to get the drivers from Garmin.com
or
use the attached file, change extension to .exe first

adapter

You can also get a nine pin to USB adapter. Pretty cheap on ebay or about $20 at best buy or similar store.

Dan,

Thanks for your suggestion on the download, I had already downloaded these updates and when I plug the data card reader into the laptop USB port I get a message "Comport does not exist". No USB ports are listed in the drop down menu for me to try, only com ports 1 thru 8.

somehow I need to get software to enable me to select a USB port for the data card reader.

The only other option I can see is buying a custom cable to run between the 4 pin connector on the GPS and the USB port. Such a cable is available for around $40 plus shipping, I was just hoping to get around it.

Not a good option as downloads take at least 10 times longer through the GPS unit. Only practical for a max 16 mb card. Did you go to Control Panel,Add New Hardware after plugging the card reader in?

What operating sys are you using?

Just a suggestion. Do you have any PDA software loaded on the PC? If you do, close it before trying to use the card reader/programmer. PDA software (Palm) will suck up the USB as it's own dedicated port. And you can check the FAQ on the Garmin site. After the human help told me about the PDA problem I went back and found it listed in the help file.
