Two GPS units ?

I noticed on photos of bikes running in the Iron Butt this year many have two GPS units.
If it's just for a backup then another of the same model mounted would make sense but in most cases it's two different models mounted....
Anyone know the reason ?

Generally, one is used for 'Housekeeping' IE: total miles, running hours, stopped hours, speedo functions, etc. The second unit is there for primary routing chores. That is why you may see an old SPIII on one side and a 2610, 2720, or Zumo on the other.

The routing is done by the faster unit while the old guy just counts miles and time. There is backup potential there also should one go down during the rally.
