I have Tom Tom 5 on my PDA and find it very useful. Never having used a Garmin I cannot give you any comparisions but from what I have heard they seem to be after 2 different markets. Garmin will let you create complex journeys on your PC and download them to the unit and that is the route you follow. Tom Tom is more a case of entering your start and finish places, type of journey and then following the softwares route which will update if you stray. This makes it ideal for people with a terrible sense of direction like my wife. Yoou can do via's or waypoints but as you allways have to enter info to the PDA it can be a bit fiddly but if you just want to go there it is very good at what it does.
