Garmin Mapsource Update V 8 NT

Contacted Garmin today to request the update to Mapsource vers 8. They said it would not be availbale until Sept 15. Then it should be ordered via their web site, order the update, not the whole product and if you qualify for the update, there will be no charge. There are 2 vversion 8s for Mapsource, the one for the 2730 and later is NT.

I"ve got the version 8 update sitting on my desk at home. I didn't upgrae before I left for CCR and my cross country trip, but I'll do so once I get home. Someone at Garmin doesn't know if they're scratching their watch or winding their ass.

The current version of MapSource is 6.11.3 and is available on the Garmin website for free. The City Navigator is the one that is version 8. There is a fee for this unless you activated version 7 recently and the DVD is available from Garmin now.

> Thank you for contacting Garmin International. Unfortunately, these
update discs will not be available even to order until around the 15th of
this month. We'll be happy to get one to you as quickly as possible, but
they have not been released yet so we cannot order them at this time. I'm
sorry for any inconvenience. I would think the version 7 should work on
your trip, chances are, there won't be so many changes in a particular area
that it will be unusable. Thank you.

Subject: Tech support request for StreetPilot 2730

E-Mail: [email protected]
Product: StreetPilot 2730
Software Version: 6.x

Problem:
I desperately need my V 8.0 DVD update, is there any way to tell when I am
"in line" to get it? I have a trip starting Saturday covering 1,000 miles
of very very uncharted territory and will likely end up in mexico...

I spoke with tech support last week and was told that purchasers would be
notified--not sure if that meant the disks would be automatically mailed,
based on first bought, first sent, or just emailed.

is there any way to get one express mailed, or downloadable, or any other
options?

Pete

a) mine came with version 6
b) I communicate daily on bmwlt.com, a forum for bmw motorcyclists, and there are many who have version 8 already, so what's the deal, are they lying or is there something not quite right here with the different responses I am getting from garmin customer support (which I had been told was world class, prior to the worthless response I got when asking about installing the motorcycle wiring kit I purchased--'have it professionally installed" and now this)

Pete

so what is the deal, do we have to ORDER the damn update, and give a credit card number, then hope they don't actually charge us, or is it supposed to happen automatically? I've literally spent three hours on the phone (my desk phone has a timer) and multiple emails, with no answers.

Funny, but a few weeks ago someone had a thread here that started "Garmin Customer Service A+" or something...

any help?

Today's update

from garmin tech support:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. There may be quite a few devices that are out there that have already been updated with the City Navigator version 8 software. The StreetPilot 2730 uses a new type of software called City Navigator NT. The NT stands for New Technology. This mapping program will require a different update than our previous devices will use. The older units update is available, but the NT update is not available yet. This is supposed to be available and begin shipping at the end of this week. You'll need to make sure you've got everything registered so we can send you the email notification and order form when it's available so we can send it out to you. When you say the device came with version 6, that is most likely in reference to the operating system. This is the internal software that allows the device to function properly. That will have nothing to do with the map information. We post these updates fairly often and always at no cost on our website. You can download and install the most updated version 6.20 of the operating system by clicking on the link below and following the instructions at the bottom of the page. This will take you through the process of installing the most current operating system software. Thank you.

I have had the version 8 for a month as well. The update you received will work on 26XX series units. For the 27XX you will have to wait until the September 15 (moved back from the August 31 release date originally stated) release of the NT version.
