Straight from Garmin...New Software Release

I bought a 2730 which came with version 6 of the map software, spoke with tech support YESTERDAY, was told that everyone who purchased qualifying models and has registered their gps since April will be contacted and sent the brand new DVD beginning today (first registered, first contacted). in other words..."THE NEW MAPS ARE A-COMIN'!!!"

well, I live in a new home in a new subdivision, and NOTHING in my area is on V6, and I get lost more than Helen Keller in a corn maze, so I need my V8!!! Hell, being as that I just registered mine, I am worried that i won't get it before a 460-mile trip in two weeks...

Bought my 2730 from costco in August, have registered online. Do you have to ask for V8 or will they just send it? btw, mine came with V7.

Turns out that you have to order the V8 upgrade online after 9/15/06. Just go to garmin/downloads and upgrades/ order now (you must have your registration number on orange paper that came with unit.
Mine was purchased in August with V7, ordered my V8 yesterday, should get in 7 to 10 days.
I also checked for unit upgrades today and found that I had a software update available (ver 6.2). very quick and easy.
When the dvd for V8 comes do you uninstall the V7 NT from your hard drive and then install V8? Then connect the 2730 to computer and download it to the gps?
I am thinking it will be another 30 to 60 minute wait in the black hole known as Garmin support!!

Shouldn't have to uninstall. I did not when I went from V6 to V7. Both stay available on a pull down in map source.

No, leave V7 on there and just install V8. Chances are, V8 will be just an "update". If you unistall V7, V8 will refuse to install.

I received v8 about a week before I went to CCR, it was a complete new set, I just installed it without uninstalling anything on my pc, then uninstall the map on your gps and load the new ones. You have to get new unlock codes. But I only have a 2610, maybe the 2730 is different.

I bought the 2720 from Costco and the V-8 came with the gps. Seems to work fairly well. Don't know if there was a difference since I went ahead and downloaded it from the gitgo.

V8 came today, easy install process, no uninstalling, just load the dvd and it auto directs you through the map upload to gps unit as well. takes about 1.5 hours.
