Help with GPS wiring...

OK, I got my garmin 2730, which is neat as hell, ordered a BMR shelf and proper brackets, plan is to permanently wire the power cord thru the map light (I have the official Garmin power source coming early next week). Can anyone tell me specifically how to do this, keeping in mind that I am mechanically retarded (but I do have a volt-meter and a killer set of tools)?

Pete

I like my GPS wired to the battery so it doesn't have to reboot every time I make a gas stop, but that's me.

Remember that on BMW motos, the brown wire is ground.
The map light will come on even if the ignition is off so that is a good place to wire it as several on this site have done. Use your volt meter to locate a wire that is hot with the key off.
If you know how to remove the top section of the dash above the instruments that would be a good place to go in. There's 7 screws that hold that panel in place with one hidden behind the map light.
You could drill a hole in that panel for the wiring to go thru and be sure to leave some extra with a quick disconnect in case you need to remove the panel in the future. You can get a rubber grommet for the hole at Radio Shack and that will keep water out if it is snug enough around the wire.

thanks, guys...although I don't think going to radio shack is going to be an option, they just laid off over 1,000 here in the dallas area and shut doors on the stores without warning...maybe there's a grommets R us nearby
